Prenatal testosterone of progenitors could be involved in the etiology of both anorexia nervosa and autism spectrum disorders of their offspring

2014

Objectives High intrauterine testosterone (T) levels seem to play a role in the development of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), but their role in anorexia nervosa (AN) is controversial. Parents with masculinized 2D:4D ratios, a marker of the organizational effects of T, may have other relevant biological characteristics, in particular exposing their offspring to high T levels in the prenatal environment. This would increase the likelihood of their offspring developing these disorders. Methods The present study examined whether parents of offspring with AN (n=34; mean age= 51) and ASD (n=36; mean age=45) differ from control parents (n=40; mean age=43) in 2D:4D ratio, as well as by salivary …

0201: Cardiac surgery associated with cardiopulmonary bypass in patients with stable coronary disease: growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF- 15) as …

2014

BackgroundGrowth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) has been identified as a strong marker for cardiovascular disease; however, no data are available concerning the role of GDF-15 in the occurrence of organ dysfunction during cardiac surgery associated with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).MethodsThirty four patients, programmed to have non-urgent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), were included in our study. Arterial blood samples were taken sequentially from anesthesia induction (IND) until 24h after arrival at the cardiovascular intensive care unit (ICU). Plasma levels of GDF-15, follistatin-like 1 (FLST1), myeloperoxidases (MPO), hydroperoxides and plasma antioxidant status (PAS) were …

P4573In patients with acute myocardial infarction, PCSK9 levels do not predict severity and recurrence of cardiovascular events

2019

Abstract Background In patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), it remains unclear whether serum PCSK9 levels can predict the severity of the disease and the risk of future cardiovascular events. Methods Among the patients admitted for an acute myocardial infarction (MI) from September 2015 to December 2016 in an intensive care unit from a university hospital, serum PCSK9 levels were measured on admission in patients not previously receiving statin therapy. We aimed to evaluate the association between PCSK9 levels, metabolic parameters, severity of CAD on coronary angiography, and the risk of in-hospital events and at one-year follow-up. Results In a total of 648 patients (mean age: 66 …

Study of Post-Infarction Coronary Perfusion Using Quantitative Analysis of Myocardial Echocardiography With Intravenous Injection of Contrast

2005

Introduction and objectives. After a myocardial infarction, damage to the microcirculation indicates a worse prognosis. We compared the usefulness of the quantitative analysis of myocardial contrast echocardiography with intravenous injection of contrast (MCE-iv) with intracoronary injection (MCE-ic) for analyzing coronary perfusion. Patients and method. We studied 42 patients with a first ST-elevation myocardial infarction, single-vessel disease and a patent artery (TIMI 3, stenosis 0.75) and MCE-iv (perfusion of SonoVue, singleimage capture in 1 out of each 6 cycles with trigger set at end-systole, perfusion considered normal if >0.9). Perfusion was considered abnormal if 2 or more segmen…

Resistance exercise-induced hormonal response under the influence of delayed onset muscle soreness in men and boys

2010

It was hypothesized that exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD)-related alterations in hormonal responses could be observed if a second exercise bout is performed soon after an identical unaccustomed bout leading to delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Eight men (31 ± 7 years) and eight boys (14 ± 0 years) performed two exercise bouts (E1 and E2, with 48 h rest in between) consisting of three sets of bilateral knee extensions until exhaustion with 40% load. No differences between the groups or bouts were observed in the number of repetitions performed and maximal isometric force decline, or between groups in serum creatine kinase activity and DOMS. Decreased peak epinephrine (EPI) (-38%), g…

INFLUENCE OF RECOMBINANT PRO-UROKINASE ON THE HEMOSTATIC SYSTEM IN PATIENTS WITH ACUTE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION

1987

Recombinant unglycosylated pro-urokinase (recombinant single chain urokinase-type plasminogen activator, CG4509) was given to twelve patients (pts.) with acute myocardial infarction as a 20 mg bolus followed by a 60 mg intravenous infusion (iv.inf.) over 1 hour and to twelve pts. as a 10 mg bolus followed by a 30 mg iv.inf. over 1 hour. Reperfusion was angiographically confirmed in 9/12 pts. with the higher dose and in 6/12 pts. who obtained the lower dose. Different parameters of hemostasis were determined before administration, 30 min after the beginning of inf.,at the end of inf., 60 min thereafter and 6-12 hours afterwards .The most significant systemic changes were observed 60 min afte…

Vaccination Coverage Increase among Adolescent and Young Adults of the Palermo District (Italy) as a Result of a Public Health Strategy to Contrast a…

2018

During summer 2016 in the District of Palermo, Italy, the rapid succession of four cases of invasive meningococcal disease among young adults, with one death, have had an extraordinary emphasis by Local and National mass media. The resultant “epidemic of panic” among general population overloaded vaccination Units of the Palermo District during following months. Strategies implemented by Sicilian and Local Public Health Authorities to counteract “meningitis fear” were: a) extension of active and free of charge anti-meningococcal tetravalent vaccination from age class 12–18 to 12–30 years old; b) implementation of vaccination units …

Alteration of dopamine D2/D3 receptor binding in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy

2010

Summary Purpose:  To quantify extrastriatal and striatal D2/D3 receptor binding in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) using the high-affinity dopamine D2/D3 receptor positron emission tomography (PET) ligand 18F-Fallypride ([18F]FP). Methods:  Twelve patients with JME and 21 age-matched control subjects were studied. Dynamic images (180 min) were acquired after injection of [18F]FP. Patients had been seizure-free of all seizure types for at least 10 days before scanning. Parametric images of binding potential (BP) were created using the simplified reference tissue model. The images were stereotactically normalized using a ligand-specific template. We performed a voxel-based ana…
