Gene expression centroids that link with low intrinsic aerobic exercise capacity and complex disease risk

2010

A strong link exists between low aerobic exercise capacity and complex metabolic diseases. To probe this linkage, we utilized rat models of low and high intrinsic aerobic endurance running capacity that differ also in the risk for metabolic syndrome. We investigated in skeletal muscle gene-phenotype relationships that connect aerobic endurance capacity with metabolic disease risk factors. The study compared 12 high capacity runners (HCRs) and 12 low capacity runners (LCRs) from generation 18 of selection that differed by 615% for maximal treadmill endurance running capacity. On average, LCRs were heavier and had increased blood glucose, insulin, and triglycerides compared with HCRs. HCRs we…

Interhemispheric inhibition during mental actions of different complexity.

2013

International audience; Several investigations suggest that actual and mental actions trigger similar neural substrates. Yet, neurophysiological evidences on the nature of interhemispheric interactions during mental movements are still meagre. Here, we asked whether the content of mental images, investigated by task complexity, is finely represented in the inhibitory interactions between the two primary motor cortices (M1s). Subjects' left M1 was stimulated by means of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) while they were performing actual or mental movements of increasing complexity with their right hand and exerting a maximum isometric force with their left thumb and index. Thus, we sim…

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) and ischemic heart disease. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

2014

Several lines of evidence demonstrate that the immune system plays a pivotal role in development and progression of ischemic heart disease (IHD). More recently, a series of biological and clinical investigations has generated new interest about the existence of a relationship between a specific class of immunoglobulin, that is immunoglobulin E (IgE), and IHD. Data obtained in several epidemiological studies have convincingly demonstrated that the concentration of total serum IgEs is significantly increased in patients with IHD and often correlates with the prognosis. The putative mechanisms are essentially mediated by a physiological interaction between IgEs and mast cells, which triggers t…

Optimized culture conditions for tissue explants of uterine leiomyoma

2012

Background Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign tumours in women, which arise from smooth muscle cells of the uterine myometrium and usually are multicentric. In spite of their frequency pathogenesis is widely unknown, mainly due to the absence of a suitable model system. We describe the systematic optimization of culturing leiomyoma tissue explants in an economical and effective ex vivo system. Methods Different concentrations of oxygen, different media, sera, hormones, and growth factor supplements were tested. Immunohistochemical stainings with antibodies against hormone receptors as well as specifying proliferation and apoptotic indices and real-time PCR were performed. Results…

Cytokine expression profile in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

1996

Cytokines have been shown to be potent inducers of major histocompatibility complexes (MHC) class I and II as well as of cell adhesion molecules in muscle tissue cultures, indicating that cytokines may play a role in mediating muscle fiber damage in inflammatory myopathies. We found in 21 cases of autoimmune myositis various amounts of inflammatory cells expressing interleukin (IL)-1 alpha and -beta, IL-2, IL-4, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) -alpha and -beta, and interferon (IFN)-gamma and its receptor. Muscle fibers displayed enhanced expression of IL-1 alpha and -beta, IL-2, and TNF-alpha. Upregulation of cytokines was strongest at sites of cellular infiltration typical for the respective m…

Correction: One-pot synthesis of a new generation of hybrid bisphosphonate polyoxometalate gold nanoparticles as antibiofilm agents

2019

A reduced polyoxovanadate functionalized with bisphosphonate molecules was synthesized and used to prepare in one step hybrid organic–inorganic polyoxometalate decorated gold nanoparticles. These new composites were shown to strongly inhibit P. aeruginosa and S. epidermidis biofilm growth, with the three components constituting the nanoparticles (Au0 core, vanadium and alendronate) acting synergistically.

The Effect of 16-Minute Thermal Stress and 2-Minute Cold Water Immersion on the Physiological Parameters of Young Sedentary Men

2020

This study aimed to determine the effect of 16 minutes of thermal stress followed by 2 minutes of cold water immersion on the physiological parameters of fifty-five sedentary men (mean age 20.15±1.30 years), who were exposed to 16 minutes of sauna (temperature: 90-91℃; relative humidity: 14-16%) followed by 2 minutes of cold water immersion (12℃). The participants' somatic characteristics were determined before entering the sauna, and their body mass and blood pressure were measured before and after sauna treatment. Physiological parameters were monitored during the 16-minute sauna session and the 2-minute cold water immersion (CRIO) or shower. The subjects perspired 0.21-0.27 litres during…

Komunikācijas analīze platformas “YouTube” kanāliem “PewDiePie” un “Pyrocynical”

2020

Rumor de pañuelo blanco: historia, memoria y representaciones literarias de Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo

2018
