Burst analysis tool for developing neuronal networks exhibiting highly varying action potential dynamics
2012
In this paper we propose a firing statistics based neuronal network burst detection algorithm for neuronal networks exhibiting highly variable action potential dynamics. Electrical activity of neuronal networks is generally analyzed by the occurrences of spikes and bursts both in time and space. Commonly accepted analysis tools employ burst detection algorithms based on predefined criteria. However, maturing neuronal networks, such as those originating from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), exhibit highly variable network structure and time-varying dynamics. To explore the developing burst/spike activities of such networks, we propose a burst detection algorithm which utilizes the firing …
Superconducting tunnel junction fabrication on three-dimensional topography based on direct laser writing
2020
Superconducting junctions are widely used in a multitude of applications ranging from quantum information science and sensing to solidstate cooling. Traditionally, such devices must be fabricated on flat substrates using standard lithographic techniques. In this study, we demonstrate a highly versatile method that allows for superconducting junctions to be fabricated on a more complex topography. It is based on maskless direct laser writing and two-photon lithography, which allows writing in 3D space. We show that high-quality normal metal–insulator–superconductor tunnel junctions can be fabricated on top of a 20-lm-tall three-dimensional topography. Combined with conformal resist coating m…
Like Parents, like Teenagers: A Romanian Youth Smoking Overview
2015
AbstractThis paper estimates how family model influences youth's smoking behaviors and describes smoking behavior in Romania nowadays. A questionnaire-based survey was used and data was collected from a national sample (1,364 people: 536 male and 828 female; average age 22,71 years and SD=3,128). The paper analyses only the items relevant for smoking behavior.Using a quasi-experimental design, we found a significant difference determinated by father's model (ρ(1364)= 0,158, p < 0,05), mother's model (ρ(1362)=0,155, p < 0,05), and brothers/sisters’ model (ρ(1362)=0,219, p < 0,05), regarding smoking behavior. Keywords: smoking behaviour, Romanian teenagers, parental model, Health Psychology
Comparison of Microscopic Interacting Boson Model and Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation 0νββ Decay Nuclear Matrix Elements
2021
The fundamental nature of the neutrino is presently a subject of great interest. A way to access the absolute mass scale and the fundamental nature of the neutrino is to utilize the atomic nuclei through their rare decays, the neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay in particular. The experimentally measurable observable is the half-life of the decay, which can be factorized to consist of phase space factor, axial vector coupling constant, nuclear matrix element, and function containing physics beyond the standard model. Thus reliable description of nuclear matrix element is of crucial importance in order to extract information governed by the function containing physics beyond the standard m…
Jeu de Taquin and Diamond Cone for so(2n+1, C)
2020
International audience; The diamond cone is a combinatorial description for a basis of a natural indecomposable n-module, where n is the nilpotent factor of a complex semisimple Lie algebra g. After N. J. Wildberger who introduced this notion, this description was achieved for g = sl(n) , the rank 2 semisimple Lie algebras and g = sp (2n).In this work, we generalize these constructions to the Lie algebra g = so(2n + 1). The orthogonal semistandard Young tableaux were defined by M. Kashiwara and T. Nakashima, they index a basis for the shape algebra of so(2n + 1). Defining the notion of orthogonal quasistandard Young tableaux, we prove that these tableaux describe a basis for a quotient of t…
The reactivity of neonatal rabbits to the mammary pheromone as a probe for viability
2012
International audience; Newborn rabbits depend on a daily nursing interaction with the mother to gain milk and to survive. During this interaction, they localise and seize the nipples displaying a typical behaviour triggered by maternal odour cues. The mammary pheromone constitutes such a signal in domestic rabbits: it elicits sucking-related movements in more than 90% of the pups. However, some newborns remain unresponsive to the presentation of the pheromone, even pups apparently healthy and highly motivated to suck. The main goal of the present study was therefore to explore the link between the unresponsiveness of rabbit pups to the mammary pheromone and their growth and survival in bre…
Inhibition of Rac1 signaling by lovastatin protects against anthracycline-induced cardiac toxicity
2011
Normal tissue damage limits the efficacy of anticancer therapy. For anthracyclines, the clinically most relevant adverse effect is cardiotoxicity. The mechanisms involved are poorly understood and putative cardioprotectants are controversially discussed. Here, we show that the lipid-lowering drug lovastatin protects rat H9c2 cardiomyoblasts from doxorubicin in vitro. Protection by lovastatin is related to inhibition of the Ras-homologous GTPase Rac1. It rests on a reduced formation of DNA double-strand breaks, resulting from the inhibition of topoisomerase II by doxorubicin. Doxorubicin transport and reactive oxygen species are not involved. Protection by lovastatin was confirmed in vivo. I…
Tiam1 as a Signaling Mediator of Nerve Growth Factor-Dependent Neurite Outgrowth
2010
Nerve Growth Factor (NGF)-induced neuronal differentiation requires the activation of members of the Rho family of small GTPases. However, the molecular mechanisms through which NGF regulates cytoskeletal changes and neurite outgrowth are not totally understood. In this work, we identify the Rac1-specific guanine exchange factor (GEF) Tiam1 as a novel mediator of NGF/TrkA-dependent neurite elongation. In particular, we report that knockdown of Tiam1 causes a significant reduction in Rac1 activity and neurite outgrowth induced by NGF. Physical interaction between Tiam1 and active Ras (Ras- GTP), but not tyrosine phosphorylation of Tiam1, plays a central role in Rac1 activation by NGF. In add…
Migrant rap in the periphery : performing politics of belonging
2017
Focusing on a YouTube performance by an emergent Finnish Somali rapper and the audience responses it has generated, this paper looks at ways in which rap music engages with the issue of belonging. Drawing on recent theorizations of belonging as a multi-dimensional, contingent and fluid process, along with sociolinguistic work on globalization and superdiversity, Finnish hip hop culture and popular cultural practices in social media, the paper investigates how belonging is performatively and multi-semiotically interrogated in its online context. It shows how rap can serve as a significant site and channel for new voices in turbulent social settings characterized by rapid social change and co…
