2016
Abstract.SOCIAL SUPPORT AND LONELINESS OF ELDERLY WOMEN TELECARE USERSLoneliness is a negative subjective experience based on the evaluation of the quality and the amount of the individual’s social interactions. Older adults’ social networks decrease because of losses associated to widowhood, retirement and an adaptive selection process; they eliminate those relations who are less intimate and the emotionally significant contacts are the only ones who remain. Because of these and other factors, elderly women who live alone were identified as being in major risk of feeling lonely. Objectives. 1. Learning about the prevalence of loneliness in a sample of older women who are users of a telecar…
Systemic blockade of ACVR2B ligands attenuates muscle wasting in ischemic heart failure without compromising cardiac function
2020
Signaling through activin receptors regulates skeletal muscle mass and activin receptor 2B (ACVR2B) ligands are also suggested to participate in myocardial infarction (MI) pathology in the heart. In this study, we determined the effect of systemic blockade of ACVR2B ligands on cardiac function in experimental MI, and defined its efficacy to revert muscle wasting in ischemic heart failure (HF). Mice were treated with soluble ACVR2B decoy receptor (ACVR2B-Fc) to study its effect on post-MI cardiac remodeling and on later HF. Cardiac function was determined with echocardiography, and myocardium analyzed with histological and biochemical methods for hypertrophy and fibrosis. Pharmacological blo…

Population divergence in maternal investment and embryo energy use and allocation suggests adaptive responses to cool climates
2023
1. The thermal sensitivity of early life stages can play a fundamental role in constraining species distributions. For egg-laying ectotherms, cool temperatures often extend development time and exacerbate developmental energy cost. Despite these costs, egg laying is still observed at high latitudes and altitudes. How embryos overcome the developmental constraints posed by cool climates is crucial knowledge for explaining the persistence of oviparous species in such environments and for understanding thermal adaptation more broadly. 2. Here, we studied maternal investment and embryo energy use and allocation in wall lizards spanning altitudinal regions, as potential mechanisms that enable su…
Early life of fathers affects offspring fitness in a wild rodent
2019
Intergenerational fitness effects on offspring due to the early life of the parent are well studied from the standpoint of the maternal environment, but intergenerational effects owing to the paternal early life environment are often overlooked. Nonetheless, recent laboratory studies in mammals and ecologically relevant studies in invertebrates predict that paternal effects can have a major impact on the offspring's phenotype. These non‐genetic, environment‐dependent paternal effects provide a mechanism for fathers to transmit environmental information to their offspring, and could allow rapid adaptation. We used the bank vole Myodes glareolus, a wild rodent species with no paternal care, t…

Nuorten urheilupolut : tutkimus kilpaurheiluun sosiaalistumisen normeista, pääomista ja toimijuudesta
2016
Sport is a popular activity among Finnish children and adolescents. Junior sport encompasses various objectives, and one of its functions is to generate the prerequisites for competitive sport and an elite sports career. This study examines socialization into competitive sport. It approaches the socialization process as a sports path that denotes the sequence of states and events in sport as part of one’s life course. The study emphasizes experiences and through them the meaning-giving and lifeworld of the young athletes themselves. Hence, the aim of the study is to create a sociological interpretation of athlete development. The research data comprise a survey of 2,430 registered participa…
