Capillary measurement of lactate and glucose for free flap monitoring.
2014
Summary Background It is reported that the salvage rate of free flaps is inversely related to the time interval between the onset of pedicle impairments and their clinical recognition. Monitoring of free flaps is therefore of major importance and clinical monitoring remains the most used technique because of lack of low-cost and non-invasive techniques. The authors suggested an efficient, simple and cheap technique to detect early thrombotic events in monitoring free flaps with skin paddle. Methods In this multicentre prospective study, measurements of capillary glucose and lactate in the flaps were done. These parameters were compared to standardized clinical monitoring during the first fi…
Prediction of incident type 2 diabetes mellitus based on a twenty-year follow-up of the Ventimiglia heart study.
2011
A novel algorithm to predict incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (iT2DM) is presented considering data from a 20-year prospective study in a Southern Italy population. Eight hundred and fifty-eight out of 1,351 subjects (24-85 years range of age) were selected. Incident type 2 diabetes was diagnosed in 103 patients in a 20-year follow-up. The Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) and the Framingham Offspring Study simple clinical model (FOS) have been used as reference algorithms. Two custom algorithms have been created using Cox parametric hazard models followed by PROBIT analyses: the first one (VHSRISK) includes all the study subjects and the second one (VHS95RISK) evaluates separately su…
Associations of Maximal Strength and Muscular Endurance with Cardiovascular Risk Factors
2013
The aim was to study the associations of maximal strength and muscular endurance with single and clustered cardiovascular risk factors. Muscular endurance, maximal strength, cardiorespiratory fitness and waist circumference were measured in 686 young men (25±5 years). Cardiovascular risk factors (plasma glucose, serum high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure) were determined. The risk factors were transformed to z-scores and the mean of values formed clustered cardiovascular risk factor. Muscular endurance was inversely associated with triglycerides, s-LDL-cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure (β=-0.09 to - 0.23, p0.05), and positively with s-HDL choles…
The effect of growth hormone ( GH ) replacement on blood glucose homeostasis in adult nondiabetic patients with GH deficiency: real‐life data from th…
2015
SummaryObjective To assess the effect of 4 years’ growth hormone (GH) replacement on glucose homeostasis and evaluate factors affecting glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) in adults with growth hormone deficiency (GHD). Design NordiNet® International Outcome Study, a noninterventional study, monitors long-term effectiveness and safety of GH replacement [Norditropin® (somatropin), Novo Nordisk A/S] in real-life clinical practice. Patients Nondiabetic patients (n = 245) with adult-onset GHD (age ≥20 years at GH start), ≥4 years’ GH replacement and HbA1c values at baseline and 4 years were included in the analysis. Measurements Changes from baseline (∆) to 4 years in HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose…
Chronic Hyperinsulinemia Does Not Increase the Production Rate of High-Density Lipoprotein Apolipoprotein AI
2013
Objective— In vitro studies showed that insulin stimulates the production of apolipoprotein AI (apoAI). Thus, we hypothesized that chronic hyperinsulinemia could contribute to the increase in the production of high-density lipoprotein apoAI that is observed in metabolic syndrome. Approach and Results— We performed an in vivo kinetic study with stable isotope in 7 patients with insulinoma who showed hyperinsulinemia but no insulin resistance, 8 patients with insulin resistance, and 16 controls. Insulinemia was 3.1× ( P <0.01) higher in patients with insulinoma or insulin resistance than in controls in the fasting state and, respectively, 3.5× and 2.6× ( P <0.05) higher in the fed stat…
Physical activity does not inevitably improve quality of life in young adults with type 1 diabetes
2016
Relationships between exercise, glucose control and diabetes dependent quality of life (DDQoL) are not straightforward. We investigated the DDQoL of 99 persons with type 1 diabetes and linked it to individual amount of weekly physical activity and HbA1c. Physically active lifestyle was not associated with better DDQoL or glucose control.
Visceral adiposity index and DHEAS are useful markers of diabetes risk in women with polycystic ovary syndrome
2014
ObjectiveOn the basis of the known diabetes risk in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), recent guidelines of the Endocrine Society recommend the use of an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) to screen for impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in all women with PCOS. However, given the high prevalence of PCOS, OGTT would have a high cost–benefit ratio. In this study, we identified, through a receiver operating characteristic analysis, simple predictive markers of the composite endpoint (impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or IGT or IFG+IGT or T2DM) in women with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria.DesignWe conducted a cross-sectional study of 241 women with PCOS in a unive…
Placental infiltration of inflammatory markers in gestational diabetic women.
2013
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is pathology of glucose intolerance during pregnancy. It is influenced by maternal hyperglycemia and insulinemia through placental circulation. The study was undertaken to investigate the implication of pro-inflammatory factors in the placenta of GDM women. Thirty GDM women have delivered macrosomic babies, and 30 healthy age-matched pregnant women have delivered non macrosomic babies, were recruited in the study. The mRNAs encoding for IL-6, TLR4, TGF-β, CD68, CD14, EMR-1, CCL2, TCR-α, T-bet, GATA-3, leptin and adiponectin were quantified in placental samples by using RT-qPCR. The mRNA expression of the pro-inflammatory factors, i.e., IL-6, TLR4 and TGF-…
Effects of Aging on Serum Ionized and Cytosolic Free Calcium
1999
Abstract —Elevated cytosolic free calcium (Ca i ) and reciprocally reduced, extracellular ionized calcium (Ca-ion) levels are observed in both hypertension and non–insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Because the changes of vascular function and insulin sensitivity in these conditions resemble the changes associated with “normal” aging, we wondered to what extent similar alterations in calcium metabolism occur with aging per se in the absence of overt hypertension or diabetes. We therefore measured platelet Ca i levels by spectrofluorometry and serum Ca-ion levels in normotensive, nondiabetic, healthy, normal, elderly (>65 years old) subjects, mean age ±SEM, 72.2±1.5 years old (…
Evaluation of osteoblastic activity in extraction sockets treated with platelet-rich fibrin
2014
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether the use of platelet rich fibrin (PRF) improved the healing of extraction sockets. Study Design: A total of 20 patients with bilateral soft tissue impacted mandibular third molars were included in this study. The left and right third molars were extracted during the same session. Subsequently, the PRF membrane was randomly administered to one of the extraction sockets, whereas the contra lateral sockets were left without treatment. On postoperative 30. and 90. days, panoramic images and bone scintigrams were taken to evaluate the bone healing between PRF-treated and non-PRF-treated sockets. Also, periodontal evaluation was performed i…
