Growth intention and variance of firm growth rates
2023
Principal Topic Why some companies grow, and others do not? Answering this question has been one of the main tasks for entrepreneurship researchers (Audretsch et al., 2014; Gilbert et al., 2006; McKelvie & Wiklund, 2010). Differences in managerial motivation is one explanation for varying growth rates in entrepreneurial firms: variation among human motivation and abilities to act has been claimed to have important effects on all phases of the entrepreneurial process (Tominc & Rebernik, 2007), and this relates to the actual firm growth (Delmar & Wiklund, 2008). On a more general level, motivation and the effort that an entrepreneur intends to make have been referred to as growth intentions (…
Exploring the impact of sustainable value proposition on firm performance
2022
Considering the immense potential of sustainable business models in tackling the broader challenge of corporate sustainability, this paper integrates the literature streams on sustainability practices and organizational business models to analyze the performance implications of a firm's sustainable value proposition. Based on the analysis of a large panel dataset across different industries, consistent with the proposed theory, a sustainable value proposition has been found to have a positive impact on a firm's market-based financial performance (namely, Tobin's Q). Yet, this impact turns out to be highly context-dependent. In particular, the findings reveal that a firm's R&D capabilities i…

Deadlock in corporate governance: Finding a common strategy for private telephone companies, 1978–1998
2017
This paper looks at how a group of small, incumbent private telephone companies complied with the international convergence of market structures. The existing research has mainly focused on large national incumbents, assuming a transition to multinational enterprise. This development process is often associated with privatisation policies and various institutional factors. The article tests these assumptions using a case study of the network of Finnish local telephone companies. It looks at the development of an interfirm network, its perspectives on the different phases of the deregulation process, and how the network tried to regenerate itself but failed to form a unified corporate struct…
Organizational identity construction as a control mechanism
2022
This study examines how identities become constructed and regulated during a strategic organizational change process. Planning and implementing a strategy is a social process, which consists of constructing, delivering, compelling, receiving, resisting and multiple contradicting meanings. The process includes multiple social factors influencing the strategy. The visions, notions, images, conceptions, assumptions and appreciation of members of an organization make the process dynamic and flexible. Thus, the strategy process is also always a matter of organizational change. By participating in the strategy process, the members produce meanings for the process and receive meanings produced som…

Strategic renewal : Can it be done profitably?
2022
Industry transformation requires strategic renewal at the level of individual firms. Executives then face the dilemma of choosing renewal paths in the face of uncertainty over the competitive environment of the future, and hence the profitability of potential strategies. This dilemma motivates us to study industry transformation from the perspective of strategic renewal among 208 large firms in the global pulp and paper industry. The findings of our qualitative comparative analysis show that only a minority of firms in our sample succeeded in profitable proactive renewal. Content-wise, there were similarities in the pursued strategies over the wider population, but only a few maintained sup…
Strategy logic of the venture capitalist : understanding venture capitalism - the businesses within - by exploring linkages between ownership and str…
2000
This inductive, exploratory study is aimed at understanding venture capital as a business phenomenon, as someone's business. The mission is to contribute to strategising both inside and outside venture capital companies. The study centres around the 'doctor' whose serum - properly diagnosed, dosed, and injected – shields nations against economic retardation. Defined broadly, venture capitalists are a diverse community ranging from private individual investors to government-owned institutions and from entrepreneurial teams to publicly-held corporations. Empirically, the study investigates missions, organisational and legal structures, and product-market strategies of differently-owned ventur…
