Introduction. The aesthetics of migration: Reversals of marginality and the socio-political translation turn

Translation has imposed itself with determination as a condition for intercultural and linguistic exchanges among human beings living in distant parts of the globe for millennia. Not only has it contributed to the understanding of sociocultural structures, political systems, and technological and digital processes, but it has also encouraged our knowledge of the world – strengthening our awareness of marginalities, liminalities and otherness, and, certainly, widening our interlinguistic and intercultural, as well as translinguistic and transcultural horizons. This volume ranges across disciplines and subjects in translation studies, critical migration and border studies, the visual and perf…

The mediation of subtitling in the narrative construction of migrant and/or marginalized stories

Media products, cultures and the arts have recently been transformed by migration, and these cultural and aesthetic transformations have contributed to re-shaping identities, ethnicities, distant societies, and minority groups. The growing interest in migratory aesthetics has brought into representation marginalized subjectivities in ways that depart from migrant depictions in the conventional media (e.g., the news bulletins) and the oversimplified and manipulated stories of marginalization in networked mainstream platforms. Against the backdrop of narrative theory and accessibility as a new terrain of human rights practice, this study examines the subtitling activity of what I identify as …

Noble Gases Investigation on Etnean Volcanic Gases and on the Erupted Products During the 2001-2006 Period

Data acquired during the last 20 years of geochemical monitoring of volcanic gases lead us to better understand how volcanoes work. According to theoretical and experimental investigations, both the chemical and isotopic changes in sampled volcanic gases have been interpreted in terms of magma ascent using the models proposed by Nuccio & Paonita, (2001) and Caracausi et al. (2003). On the basis of numerical simulations of volatile degassing, we have been able to recognize episodes of magma migration from deeper reservoirs of Mount Etna to the shallower storage volume, until magma is erupted. The 3He/4He isotope ratios of gas emitted at the periphery of Mount Etna volcanic edifice exhibit sy…

Subtitling into ELF. When accessibility becomes a counter information tool

This study investigates the modalities by means of which the visual arts have recently been transformed by migration, and how aesthetic transformations within the context of (sub)titling have contributed to re-shaping identities and minority groups in filmic genres. The growing interest in migratory aesthetics has brought into representation marginalised subjectivities (i.e. the lives of Italians forced to emigrate from Libya after the Gadhafi coup d’état as the case in point in this work) in ways that depart from migrant depictions in the conventional media (e.g. the news bulletins). Against the backdrop of translation as a form of re-narration and an instrument of accessibility, and drawi…

Texts and Visuals in the Online Aesthetics of Migration: Translation as (Re)narration in the Creative Industries

Texts and visuals in the online aesthetics of migration: Translation as (re)narration in the creative cultural industries Within the context of Computer-mediated communication discourse (Herring 1996; 2011, 2015), this study focuses on the investigation of Internet modalities and genres through which experiences of current migration are transferred from personal stories into online public narratives, also known as “transmedia storytelling” (Jenkins 2006; Jenkins, Ford, Green 2013). The art of telling migrant stories on the web produces acts of translation in terms of (re)statements of migrant lives. This mechanism owns a repository function, which is meant to spread narratives of migration …

Subtitling in the digital era: TV crime drama series in domestic languages

This study is set within the context of extensive academic attention to and exploration of audio and visual data as resources, methods and practices in the Digital Humanities (henceforth DH) (Gallitelli 2016). DH are seen and understood as a large and heterogeneous container that accommodates different research areas and affects various media. It is a relatively young field of study, inextricably linked to the development of information technologies within which the audiovisual dimension plays a central role. Audiovisual texts as forms of knowing, learning and entertaining have recently achieved a strategic position in the field of DH alongside current advances in computing. The digital acc…

The value of accessibility in the culturalandcreative industries Translation-driven settings

The accessibility of Cultural Creative Industries(CCI) has grown exponentially in different parts of the globe and has increasingly become part of projects of significant importance in contemporary societies that rely on informational, global, and networked systems of communication, i.e., developed countries. CCI exist within public-domain areas and are stimulated by the critical rethinking of the means which can be used to support cultural development. CCI are in fact driven by structures of the knowledge-based economy, where information, originality, and creativity contribute to providing stimuli to their rise. Their emergence is the result of advances in cultural spheres and movements, a…
