A Property on Singularities of NURBS Curves
We prove that if a.n open Non Uniform Rational B-Spline curve of order k has a singular point, then it belongs to both curves of order k - 1 defined in the k - 2 step of the de Boor algorithm. Moreover, both curves are tangent at the singular point.

PDE triangular Bézier surfaces: Harmonic, biharmonic and isotropic surfaces
We approach surface design by solving second-order and fourth-order Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). We present many methods for designing triangular Bézier PDE surfaces given different sets of prescribed control points and including the special cases of harmonic and biharmonic surfaces. Moreover, we introduce and study a second-order and a fourth-order symmetric operator to overcome the anisotropy drawback of the harmonic and biharmonic operators over triangular Bézier surfaces. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Circulating miR-30b-5p levels in plasma as a novel potential biomarker for early detection of breast cancer
Background Recently, microRNAs have been demonstrated to be potential non-invasive biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis assessment or prediction of response to treatment in cancer. In this study, we evaluate the potential of miR-30b-5p as a biomarker for early diagnosis of breast cancer (BC) in tissue and plasma. Methods Expression of miR-30b-5p was determined in a series of 112 BC and 40 normal breast tissues. Circulating miR-30b-5p levels in plasma samples were determined in a discovery cohort of 38 BC patients and 40 healthy donors and in a validation cohort of 83 BC patients and 83 healthy volunteers. miR-30b-5p expression was measured by quantitative real-time PCR and receiver operating…
Correlations of female steroid hormone receptors with histologic features in meningiomas.
A series of 39 samples were obtained from meningiomas in 28 patients in order to investigate the relationships of the oestrogen receptor (OER) and progesterone receptor (PR) with the tumoural subtype and some histological features. Twenty-one samples were positive (greater than 10 fmole/mg protein), 7 were OER-PR-negative, and 1 was positive in both receptors. Twenty-two samples were considered as syncitial, 7 transitional, 7 fibroblastic and 3 angioblastic. The histological subtype was not found to be significantly related to the presence or absence of PR. Relations were not observed between the progestin receptor and the following histological parameters: cellular pattern, cell density, n…
The role of AXL as mechanism of resistance to trastuzumab and a prognostic factor in breast cancer HER2 positive: A translational approach
Abstract Background Breast cancer (BC) is a heterogeneous disease. HER2+ BC represents between 15-30% of cases. Trastuzumab (T), a monoclonal antibody, has been successfully improved clinical benefits in both adjuvant and in metastatic settings. Despite this evidence, many patients experience resistance to therapy. The objective of this study is to assess AXL as a potential mechanism of resistance and its implication as a prognostic factor. Methods We used three cell lines with acquired resistance to T. Resistant models were generated by treating parental cells (AU565, SKR3, BT474) with constant dose of T (15mg/mL) for 6 months. Cell viability was estimated by MTT assay. Proteins were asses…
Ten-year assessment of a cancer fast-track programme to connect primary care with oncology: reducing time from initial symptoms to diagnosis and treatment initiation.
Background Cancer is the second leading cause of mortality worldwide. Integrating different levels of care by implementing screening programmes, extending diagnostic tools and applying therapeutic advances may increase survival. We implemented a cancer fast-track programme (CFP) to shorten the time between suspected cancer symptoms, diagnosis and therapy initiation. Patients and methods Descriptive data were collected from the 10 years since the CFP was implemented (2009-2019) at the Clinico-Malvarrosa Health Department in Valencia, Spain. General practitioners (GPs), an oncology coordinator and 11 specialists designed guidelines for GP patient referral to the CFP, including criteria for br…

Triangular Bézier Approximations to Constant Mean Curvature Surfaces
We give a method to generate polynomial approximations to constant mean curvature surfaces with prescribed boundary. We address this problem by finding triangular Bezier extremals of the CMC-functional among all polynomial surfaces with a prescribed boundary. Moreover, we analyze the $\mathcal{C}^1$ problem, we give a procedure to obtain solutions once the tangent planes for the boundary curves are also given.
Ten-Year Safety and Efficacy Analyses of the Big 02-98 Phase III Trial with an Exploratory Analysis on the Role of Ki67 in Predicting Benefit of Adjuvant Docetaxel in Er Positive Patients
ABSTRACT Aim: The BIG 2-98 is a randomized phase III trial that tested the effect of adding docetaxel with anthracycline-based adjuvant chemotherapy (CT) in women with node-positive breast cancer (BC). here we present the 10 year safety and efficacy analyses and report an exploratory analysis of the predictive value of Ki67 for docetaxel efficacy. Methods: In total, 2,887 patients with node positive BC were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: (I) sequential control: doxorubicin (A, 75 mg/m2) × 4 → CMF; (II) concurrent control: AC × 4 → CMF; (III) A × 3 → docetaxel (T, 100 mg/m2) × 3 → CMF and (IV) : AT (50/75 mg/m2) × 4 → CMF. The primary objective was to evaluate the efficacy of d…
Association of derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) with pathological complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (CT)
Abstract Background dNLR is a novel biomarker associated with clinical outcome in solid tumors including early stage breast cancer (BC). Here we report the association of dNLR with pCR in triple-negative (TN) and luminal BC patients (pts) treated with neoadjuvant CT. Methods This was a retrospective analysis of two randomized studies (GEICAM/2006-03 - NCT00432172 and ETNA - NCT01822314) involving 821 pts with early stage (>2cm) or locally advanced TN or luminal BC receiving anthracycline/taxane-based CT +/- carboplatin (GEICAM/2006-03) or nab-paclitaxel/paclitaxel followed by anthracycline regimen (ETNA). dNLR was calculated as the ratio of neutrophils and the difference between total leuko…
Global transcriptome deregulation of breast cancer in very young women samples
Abstract GS2-04: Efficacy results from CIBOMA/2004-01_GEICAM/2003-11 study: A randomized phase III trial assessing adjuvant capecitabine after standard chemotherapy for patients with early triple negative breast cancer
Abstract Background: Triple negative breast cancers (TNBC) have a greater risk of relapse than non-TNBC. New therapeutic approaches are needed for these patients (pts). CIBOMA/2004-01_GEICAM/2003-11 is a multinational, randomized phase III trial exploring adjuvant capecitabine (X) after completion of standard treatment in early TNBC pts. Materials and Methods: Patients with operable, node-positive (or node-negative with tumor size ≥ 1 cm), centrally confirmed hormone receptor-negative, HER2-negative early BC, who had received 6–8 cycles (cy) of standard anthracycline and/or taxane-containing chemotherapy or 4 cy of doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide (for node-negative disease) in the (neo)adjuvan…
Outcomes of single versus double hormone receptor–positive breast cancer. A GEICAM/9906 sub-study
Abstract Background Retrospective data suggest better outcomes for patients with double hormonal receptor (oestrogen [ER] and progesterone receptor [PgR])–positive (dHR+) early breast cancer, compared with single hormonal receptor–positive, sHR+, (ER+/PgR– or ER–/PgR+) disease. Here, we evaluate the classification according to intrinsic subtypes and clinical outcomes of sHR+ versus dHR+ in HER2-negative breast cancer patients enrolled in GEICAM/9906 study ( NCT00129922 ). Methods Archival tumours were retrieved retrospectively for the analysis of ER, PgR and HER2 status and classified into intrinsic subtypes using the PAM50 gene expression assay. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall surv…

Association Between ABCB1 Genetic Variants and Persistent Chemotherapy-Induced Alopecia in Women With Breast Cancer
Importance Persistent chemotherapy-induced alopecia (pCIA) has been recently described in patients with breast cancer and in its most severe form occurs in up to 10% of these patients. Genetic risk factors associated with pCIA have not been adequately explored. Objective To identify genetic variants associated with pCIA. Design, Setting, and Participants In this genetic association study, 215 women with breast cancer treated with docetaxel-based chemotherapy with a follow-up of 1.5 to 10 years after the end of the treatment were recruited retrospectively through 3 hospital oncology units across Spain between 2005 and 2018. Severe pCIA was defined as lack of scalp hair recovery (Common Termi…
Quantitative monoclonal antibody determination of estrogen and progesterone receptors in human breast cancer: correlation with the radioligand method.
To assess the possibility of substituting our routine method (dextran-coated charcoal, DCC) of determining estrogen (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) for an enzyme immunoassay technique (EIA), we compared the two methods for determination of the two types of receptor in breast cancer specimens. In terms of sample positivity or negativity, the two techniques agreed in 76 of the 82 samples analyzed for ER (92.7%; p0.001), and in 65 out of 75 samples assayed for PR (86.6%; p0.001). Quantitative analysis of the data showed a significant correlation between DCC and EIA for both ER (r = 0.84; p0.0001) and PR (r = 0.77; p0.0001). The results suggest the usefulness of EIA in substituting DCC, al…
