Varying plant protein sources in the diet of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax differently affects lipid metabolism and deposition

The liver activity of lipogenic enzymes, the lipid content in various tissues, and plasma lipid levels of major, were measured in sea bass (D. labrax) fed over 96 days either a, fish meal-based control diet or preparations where 70% of fish meal protein was replaced by wheat gluten singly or in combination with pea or soybean meals. Relative to the controls, sea bass fed the wheat gluten-based diet resulted in stimulated lipogenesis in liver and increased lipid deposition in muscle. The opposite occurred when a substantial amount of soybean meal was included in the diet. Mesenteric fat depots were apparently insensitive to major changes in dietary protein source in fish showing similar inta…

Airway hyperresponsiveness in the elderly: prevalence and clinical implications.

Airway hyperresponsiveness is associated with an increased risk of developing respiratory symptoms. The assessment of airway hyperresponsiveness can provide valuable information regarding the natural course of respiratory diseases. However, little information is available for populations of more advanced age, and data are conflicting. It was assessed whether age influences the occurrence of airway hyperresponsiveness by reviewing those studies that specifically addressed this issue, and attempting to identify the factors responsible for discrepancies between studies. Eighteen studies, published between 1983 and 2002, are included in this review. Overall, the results of the analysis are in f…

Lipid composition and metabolism of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) fed diets containing wheat gluten and legumes meals as substitutes for fish meal

The role of dietary protein source on growth performance and lipid metabolism in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was investigated, by the evaluation of fat content in different tissues, plasma metabolites, liver lipogenic activity and fatty acid composition of dorsal muscle tissue.Five isonitrogenous (490gkg-1crude protein dry-matter basis) and isolipidic (170gkg-1lipid dry-matter basis) diets with graded levels of wheat gluten, soybean and pea meal in substitution of fish meal were evaluated in European sea bass (initial body weight 23.9±0.1) for 96days. There was a significant difference (p<0.05) in dorsal muscle and liver lipid contents. Plasma glucose and cholesterol levels …

Rapidly progressive organising pneumonia associated with cytomegalovirus infection in a patient with psoriasis.

A 63-year-old woman experienced progressive respiratory distress and psoriatic plaques. The radiographic images showed diffuse interstitial infiltrates. The surgical open lung biopsy revealed an obliteration of the alveolar spaces by plugs of connective tissue distributed within the terminal bronchioles, alveolar ducts and spaces. No relevant cause was determined, and she was diagnosed with idiopathic organising pneumonia. The patient was discharged with oral glucocorticosteroid and supplemental oxygen therapy. One month later, the patient’s pulmonary status had progressively worsened, and she was re-admitted. She required higher oxygen concentrations and mechanical ventilation. Pharmacol…

Partial substitution of fish meal with vegetable protein sources in a diet for sea bass: effects on lipogenesis

Three isoproteic (49.4%) and isolipidic (17.0%) diets were prepared: A control diet FM, in which protein was derived from fish meal and two experimental diets in which 70% of the fish meal protein was substituted with wheat gluten meal (WGM) or wheat gluten meal plus soybean meal (WGMsb), respectively. The essential limiting amino acids were added to satisfy the requirements of the species (Tibaldi et al., 1996). Three hundred and fifteen sea bass (initial weight = 23.9±0. 1g )were randomly divided into nine homogenous groups. The animals were reared in a closed recirculation system at 23.9 ◦ C and were fed ad libitum twice a day for 96 days. The fish were weighed at the beginning and the e…

Physical capacity in performing daily activities is reduced in scleroderma patients with early lung involvement

Background and Aims Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) often complain reduced capacity at submaximal exercise; conversely, physical capacity in performing daily duties has never been measured in SSc. The aim of this study is to evaluate this performance and its correlates, in patients with SSc compared with healthy controls, in a free-living setting. Methods Twenty-seven outpatients with stable SSc and 11 controls were recruited. Physical activity was assessed by portable multiple sensor device (SenseWear Armband) worn for at least 6 days. Physical activity duration (PAD; in minutes) for non-sedentary activities and physical activity level (PAL = total daily energy/resting energy expend…
