Introduction to environmental security
The term "Environmental Security" refers to a range of concerns that can be organized into three general categories: (1) concerns about the adverse impact of human activities on the environment, seen as an asset to be inherited by the next generations; (2) concerns about the direct and indirect effects of various forms of environmental change (especially scarcity and degradation), which may be natural or human-generated on national and regional security; (3) concerns about the loss of security individuals and groups (from small communities to humankind) experience due to environmental change such as water scarcity, air pollution, global warming, and so on. In order to provide sustainability…

Drought Stress Study on Nicotiana tabacum L., “Baladi”, an In Vitro Experimental Model
Crops drought tolerance is a trait of outmost importance for agriculture especially today when climate change is affecting more the production for food and feed. The scope of this article is to evaluate in vitro drought stress response of Nicotiana tabacum L., “Baladi”. The experiment was set up for four successive stages starting with in vitro seedling development, hypocotyl cultivation, three generations of micropropagation, pre-acclimatization and acclimatization. The effect of abscisic acid (ABA) and/or polyethylene-glycol 6000 (PEG) on tobacco hypocotyl caulogenesis and micropropagation were investigated. Superoxide-dismutases (SODs) and peroxidases (POXs) are more active and different…

Economical Issues Regarding the Implementation and Functioning of the Common Catalogue of Varieties of Agricultural Plant Species
Abstract Economical constraints regarding the full implementation and functioning of the common catalogue on plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGEFA) are discussed in this paper based on the assessment of the current European Union regulatory framework. Based on this article's results new financial mechanisms should be developed at the national level for further responding to the European requirements including measures regarding the conservation varieties. This assessment is further supporting the need for developing and implementing new financial mechanisms in the support of the poor rural populations as well as for small farmers in harmony with commercial agriculture.
