A structural investigation of titanium dioxide photocatalysts
Abstract A study of the structure and the morphology of a titanium dioxide photocatalyst (Degussa P25) reveals multiphasic material consisting of an amorphous state, together with the crystalline phases anatase and rutile in the approximate proportions 80 20 . Transmission electron microscopy provides evidence that some individual particles are a mixture of the amorphous state with either the anatase phase or with the rutile phase, and that some particles, which are mostly anatase, are covered by a thin overlayer of rutile which manifests its presence by the appearance of Moire fringes. Relative proportions of rutile and pseudo-brookite phases in the Fe(III)-TiO2 system at elevated temperature
Abstract The Fe(III)-TiO2 system has been studied at T ≥ 1023 K in the range of concentration 2–10 at.% of iron by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and optical microscopy. The relationship between the relative proportions of the TiO2 rutile phase and the pseudo-brookite phase Fe2TiO5, has been investigated in powder samples. Single crystals of pure rutile and rutile doped with 0.5 at.% of iron have been examined to elucidate the microstructures found in the powders. The results suggest that a low degree of solid solubility exists and that doped crystals contain planar faults on 101 planes.
Preparation characterization and photocatalytic activity of polycrystalline ZnO/TiO2 systems. 2. Surface, bulk characterization, and 4-nitrophenol photodegradation in liquid-solid regime
Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and monitoring of pyridine (py) and boric acid trimethyl ester (BATE) adsorption for determining surface acidity and basicity, respectively, were used to carry out further characterization of mixed ZnO/TiO2 polycrystalline solids prepared by different methods. Moreover, the powders were tested in a batch photoreactor for a probe reaction, i.e., 4-nitrophenol photodegradation in aqueous medium. ESR results indicated the presence of signals attributable to Zn+ species in ZnO/TiO2 (anatase) solids, while in ZnO/TiO2 (rutile) samples the presence of zinc induced only the formation of signals probably due…
