Act on private basis in diplomacy of one’s own city. The example of Nicias’ peace in Thucydides. During the diplomatic exchanges related at the beginning of the fifth book, Thucydides shows two explicit private interventions using words connected with idia. First, two ephores, Cleoboulos and Xenares, make private propositions. Then, an Athenian, Alcibiades sends a private messenger. Whereas these two actions are unique in the fifth book, because Thucydides’ vocabulary is specific, some other citizens express opinions different from the majority decisions. A Chalcedonian Debt: Observations about the Attempts to Redress the Athenian Fiscal Policy (411-407)

Thucydides and Xenophon report several Athenian fundraisings in Ionia between 411 and 407. For one of them, Xenophon uses the term phoros and specifies that a backlog was due. However, the Athenians had abolished the tribute in 413 and replaced it with eikoste, a tax of one-twentieth on maritime trade. This article proposes to reexamine this well-known historical problem of the phoros reinstatement considering it through the prism of the debt in a contextualized study which leads to reassert, among others, that several tax systems were coexisting.

This contribution analyses the reasons for and the consequences of the failure of the famous Sicilian expedition of 415-413 BC, a great armada launched by the Classical Athenians against Syracuse in the midst of the bitter conflict against the Spartans known as the Peloponnesian War (431-404 B C). Following the ancient Athenian historian Thucydides, the authors conclude that the similarity between Athens and Syracuse in terms of political structures and military resources nullified the Athenians' usual tactics of bringing other Greek city-states under their control through either a popular regime change, or the deployment of overwhelming force.
