SVG rendering for internet imaging
2006
The SVG (scalable vector graphics) standard allows representing complex graphical scenes by a collection of graphic vectorial-based primitives, offering several advantages with respect to classical raster images such as: scalability, resolution independence, etc. In this paper we present a full comparison between some advanced raster to SVG algorithms: SWaterG, SVGenie, SVGWave and some commercial tools. SWaterG works by a watershed decomposition coupled with some ad-hoc heuristics, SVGenie and SVGWave use a polygonalization based respectively on data dependent and wavelet triangulation. The results obtained by SWaterG, SVGenie and SVGWave are satisfactory both in terms of perceptual measur…

Ad-Hoc Segmentation Pipeline for Microarray Image Analysis
2006
Microarray is a new class of biotechnologies able to help biologist researches to extrapolate new knowledge from biological experiments. Image Analysis is devoted to extrapolate, process and visualize image information. For this reason it has found application also in Microarray, where it is a crucial step of this technology (e.g. segmentation). In this paper we describe MISP (Microarray Image Segmentation Pipeline), a new segmentation pipeline for Microarray Image Analysis. The pipeline uses a recent segmentation algorithm based on statistical analysis coupled with K-Means algorithm. The Spot masks produced by MISP are used to determinate spots information and quality measures. A software …
Digital Mosaic Frameworks - an overview
2007
Art often provides valuable hints for technological innovations especially in the field of Image Processing and Computer Graphics. In this paper we survey in a unified framework several methods to transform raster input images into good quality mosaics. For each of the major different approaches in literature the paper reports a short description and a discussion of the most relevant issues. To complete the survey comparisons among the different techniques both in terms of visual quality and computational complexity are provided.

A novel technique for opus vermiculatum mosaic rendering
2006
In this paper we present a method to generate a digital mosaic starting from a raster input image. Mosaics generation of artistic quality is challenging. The basic elements, the tiles, typically small polygons, must be packed tightly, emphasizing orientations chosen by the artist. An adhoc boundaries detection have to be performed according to the directional guidelines. Different mosaic styles can be automatically rendered, depending on artistic techniques considered (“opus musivum”, “opus vermiculatum”, etc.). The proposed method is able to reproduce the colors of the original image emphasizing relevant boundaries by placing tiles along their direction. The boundaries detection is based o…

Statistical Modeling of Huffman Tables Coding
2005
An innovative algorithm for automatic generation of Huffman coding tables for semantic classes of digital images is presented. Collecting statistics over a large dataset of corresponding images, we generated Huffman tables for three images classes: landscape, portrait and document. Comparisons between the new tables and the JPEG standard coding tables, using also different quality settings, have shown the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in terms of final bit size (e.g. compression ratio).
