The burden of previous fractures in hip fracture patients. The Break Study
A positive history of fractures in older patients with hip fracture is common. We determined the risk factors associated with a positive history of fractures and the profile of care in hip fracture patients. In the Break Study, we enrolled 1249 women aged ≥60 years, seeking care for a hip fracture. Baseline information included age, body mass index, lifestyle (smoking habit, alcohol consumption), patient's history of fracture after the age of 50 years, family history of fragility fracture and health status (presence of comorbidity, use of specific drugs, pre-fracture walking ability, type of fracture, time to surgery, type of surgery, osteoporosis treatment). In the multivariable model age,…

Can Vitamin D deficiency influence muscle perfomance in post-menopausal women? A multicenter retrospective study
Background: The presence of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) has been recently demonstrated in human muscle supporting the theory of a role of vitamin D in the proliferation and differentiation of muscle cells. So far only few studies investigated the association between vitamin D and muscle performance in postmenopausal women. Aim: To define the functional impact of vitamin D deficiency. Design: Multicenter retrospective study. Setting: Five Italian outpatient services of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM). Population: Postmenopausal women. Methods: We divided the population in two groups based on the threshold of 30 ng/mL as cut-off to define sufficient and insufficient serum levels o…

Vertebral fractures, function and cognitive status in osteoporotic hip fractured women: The FOCUS study
Introduction Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural modifications of bone tissue, with a consequent increase in fragility fractures. Vertebral fractures (VF) are the most prevalent osteoporotic fractures and osteoporotic hip fractures are the most serious complication of osteoporosis. The objectives of the present study were to determine the prevalence of VF in osteoporotic hip fractured women and to evaluate their association with pre-existing factors such as activities of daily living, quality of walking, numbers of falls, cognitive aspects and comorbidities. Material and methods Twenty-five departments of Orthopaedics, Rehabilitation and Geriatrics particip…
FRI0299 Prevalence of Vertebral Fractures in Osteoporotic HIP Fractured Patients: The Focus Study
Background Osteoporosis is a multifactorial systemic skeletal disease, characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural modifications of bone tissue, with a consequent increase in fragility fractures [1]. Vertebral fractures are the most prevalent osteoporotic fractures and osteoporotic hip fractures are the most serious complication of osteoporosis resulting in increased mortality and high socio-economic cost [2,3]. The coexistence of these two pathological conditions in elderly patients has been previously described, leading to even worse functional outcomes than each one alone [4]. Objectives To determine the prevalence of vertebral fractures in osteoporotic hip fractured women and …
