Utilization of professional psychological care in a large German sample of cancer patients
Objective Although one-third of cancer patients are perceived to have a need for psychological support based on the percentage of mental disorders, little is known about the actual utilization of psychological care in cancer. We aimed to assess cancer patients' reported use of psychological care and its correlates in a large, representative sample. Methods In a multicenter, cross-sectional study in Germany, 4020 cancer patients (mean age 58 years, 51% women) were evaluated. SIL1 mutations and clinical spectrum in patients with Marinesco-Sjogren syndrome.
Marinesco-Sjogren syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive multisystem disorder featuring cerebellar ataxia, early-onset cataracts, chronic myopathy, variable intellectual disability and delayed motor development. More recently, mutations in the SIL1 gene, which encodes an endoplasmic reticulum resident co-chaperone, were identified as the main cause of Marinesco-Sjogren syndrome. Here we describe the results of SIL1 mutation analysis in 62 patients presenting with early-onset ataxia, cataracts and myopathy or combinations of at least two of these. Background: We aimed to analyze preferred and perceived levels of patients’ involvement in treatment decision-making in a representative sample of cancer patients. Material and Methods: We conducted a multicenter, epidemiological cross-sectional study with a stratified random sample based on the incidence of cancer diagnoses in Germany. Data were collected between January 2008 and December 2010. Analyses were undertaken between 2017 and 2019. We included 5889 adult cancer patients across all cancer entities and disease stages from 30 acute care hospitals, outpatient facilities, and cancer rehabilitation clinics in five regions in Germany. Psycho‐oncological care of melanoma patients in certified skin cancer centers
Background The establishment und certification of skin cancer centers (SCCs) in compliance with requirements issued by the German Cancer Society play a key role for quality-assured treatment of skin cancer patients. These requirements also call for the implementation of a qualified psycho-oncology program. When planning the present study, we assumed site-specific differences in the way such programs were implemented at various SCCs. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), a major cytokine with diverse effects on cells mainly of the immune and hematopoietic systems, has been linked to several neurological disorders such as acquired immune deficiency syndrome dementia, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease. Central nervous system (CNS)-specific expression of IL-6 caused neurodegeneration, massive gliosis, and vascular proliferation in transgenic mice. However, the effects of systemically circulating IL-6 and its receptor IL-6Ralpha on the CNS are unknown. Myopathy with hexagonally cross-linked crystalloid inclusions: delineation of a clinico-pathological entity.
A novel myopathy characterized by hexagonally cross-linked tubular arrays has been reported in five patients. We studied the clinical and histopathological features of five additional unrelated patients with this myopathy. Patients experienced exercise intolerance with exercise-induced myalgia and weakness, without rhabdomyolysis. One patient additionally presented mild permanent pelvic girdle muscle weakness. Age at onset varied between 13 and 56 years. The inclusions were eosinophilic on H and E, bright red with modified Gomori’s trichrome stains, present in type 2 fibers, and revealed immunoreactivity selectively for a caveolin-3-antibody. The cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) has multiple functions in the immune and hematopoietic systems. IL-6 is related to ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), a trophic factor for motoneurons, sensory dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons, and other neuronal subpopulations. Both act via related receptor complexes, consisting of one ligand-specific α-receptor subunit (IL-6R and CNTFR, respectively) and two signal-transducing receptor components. Skeletal muscle oedema and muscle fibre necrosis during septic shock. Observations with a porcine septic shock model
In domestic pigs, intermitted application of Escherichia coli-endotoxin was used to create an animal model for a prolonged hypo- and hyperdynamic septic shock-like state and to investigate mechanisms of multiple organ failure. Here, we describe the changes in skeletal muscle after 18 h (2 animals) and 48 h (6 animals) of septic shock. Two pigs for each observation period that received physiologic saline solutions instead of endotoxin served as controls. The earliest lesions were endothelial cell damage with endomysial oedema and swelling of mitochondria in muscle fibres. Morphology of cardiac muscle in septic shock. Observations with a porcine septic shock model.
The morphology of cardiac muscle was investigated in a porcine model of septic shock, created by intermitted application of Escherichia coli-endotoxin. The earliest lesions, found after 18 h of septic shock, were endothelial cell swelling, marked leucostasis and slight ischaemic alterations of the muscle fibres. At the end point of the experiments, after 48 h, some fibrin thrombi were found associated with more pronounced ischaemic alterations of cardiac muscle cells and some necrotic fibres. Comparing these findings with the severe endothelial and muscle fibre lesions found in skeletal muscle, the endothelial cells of the heart microvasculature, are clearly more resistant to the attack of …
Age and gender differences in anxiety and depression in cancer patients compared with the general population.
Objective The aim of this study was to compare the levels of anxiety and depression in cancer patients with those of the general population, to examine age and gender differences in anxiety and depression, to analyse the impact of several socio-demographic and clinical parameters on anxiety and depression, and to test the age and gender measurement invariance of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).
