The cool Galactic R Coronae Borealis variable DY Persei

2005

Results of first CCD photometry during the recent deep light decline, and high-resolution spectroscopy, are presented for DY Persei. The spectra show variable blueshifted features in the sodium D lines. The C  lines are strong whereas neutron- capture elements are not enhanced. The isotopic 13 CN(2, 0) lines relative to 12 CN are of similar strength with those for the carbon star U Hya. All these confirm the RCB nature of DY Per and the existence of ejected clouds. At least two clouds are revealed at −197.3 and −143.0 km s −1 . A star was detected about 0. 4t o the west and 2 . 5 to the north from DY Per. This anonymous companion, with observed colour indices (B − V) = 0.68 and (V − R) 1…

Validating post-AGB candidates in the LMC and SMC using SALT spectra

2020

We selected a sample of post-AGB candidates in the Magellanic Clouds on the basis of their near- and mid-infrared colour characteristics. Fifteen of the most optically bright post-AGB candidates were observed with the South African Large Telescope in order to determine their stellar parameters and thus to validate or discriminate their nature as post-AGB objects in the Magellanic Clouds. The spectral types of absorption-line objects were estimated according to the MK classification, and effective temperatures were obtained by means of stellar atmosphere modelling. Emission-line objects were classified on the basis of the fluxes of the emission lines and the presence of the continuum. Out of…

A comprehensive analysis of the cool RCB star DY Persei

2007

Context. Theoretically, the number of cool Galactic R Coronae Borealis stars (RCBs) should be greater than the warm RCBs, however to date, only a few candidates have been detected. Aims. Observations of the extremely cool RCB candidate, DY Per, and the anonymous nearby star (the “Taipei star”) are presented to specify its fundamental parameters and evolutionary status. Methods. CCD BVRI photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy at deep light decline was carried out in 2004. A high-resolution spectrum was gathered near the maximum light in 2002, and a qualitative analysis was made relative to the typical carbon stars of various types. Results. Near the light maximums, the nearby anonymous s…

An abundance analysis of the single-lined spectroscopic binaries with barium stars-like orbital elements

1997

Detailed abundance analyses have been car- ried out for 17 single-lined binaries (giants and dwarfs) with orbital elements and mass functions similar to those of barium stars, using high-dispersion CCD spectra and model atmospheres. All these binary systems contain an unseen low-mass component, presumably, a white dwarf. A mild enhancement (+0:1 0:25 dex) of the averaged s- process elements abundances has been found only for two stars. The heavy-element overabundances in these stars are much less marked than those of the classical barium stars having similar orbital periods. We have concluded that the existence of a white dwarf (WD) companion in binary systems with barium star like characte…

Hyperfine structure measurements of neutral niobium with Fourier transform spectroscopy

2010

Aims. We report on experimental studies of hyperfine structure splitting of neutral niobium.Methods. We used high-resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy to record a spectrum of niobium produced with a hollow cathode discharge lamp in the range of wavenumbers from 10 000 cm-1 to 30 000 cm-1 .Results. The magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants A were determined for the 109 levels of odd parity by analyzing the profiles of 224 spectral lines. The A  values of 57 of these level are reported for the first time.

On metal-deficient barium stars and their link with yellow symbiotic stars

2005

This paper addresses the question of why metal-deficient barium stars are not yellow symbiotic stars (YSyS). Samples of (suspected) metal-deficient barium (mdBa) stars and YSyS have been collected from the literature, and their properties reviewed. It appears in particular that the barium nature of the suspected mdBa stars needs to be ascertained by detailed abundance analyses. Abundances are therefore derived for two of them, HD 139409 and HD 148897, which reveal that HD 148897 should not be considered a barium star. HD 139409 is a mild barium star, with overabundances observed only for elements belonging to the first s-process peak (Y and Zr). The evidence for binarity among mdBa stars is…
