Risk perception and gratitude mediate the negative relationship between COVID-19 management satisfaction and public anxiety
AbstractIn this study, we explored whether satisfaction with government management, perception of risk, and gratitude influenced public anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic in China. Using a cross-sectional, anonymous and confidential online survey, a nationwide sample of Chinese adults (N = 876) was targeted between March 25–March 30, 2020, a period in which newly confirmed cases significantly declined in China. The anxiety level was decreased as compared to that assessed during the peak period. Multiple parallel mediation modeling demonstrated that risk perception and gratitude partially mediated the relationship between satisfaction with government management and public anxiety. Increasi…
Depression is Associated with Moderate-Intensity Physical Activity among College Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Differs by Activity level, Gender and Gender-Role
Purpose: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and associated restrictive measures have implications for depressive symptoms (henceforth depression) of young people and risk may be associated with their reduced physical activity (PA) level. Therefore, we aimed to examine the association between depressive symptoms and PA among college students with different gender and gender role (masculinity traits and femininity traits) during the COVID-19 pandemic.\ud Participants and Methods: Cross-sectional study included 628 healthy college students from nineteen different locations. The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scales (CES-D), the International Physical Activity Ques…
The modulation of causal contexts in motion processes judgment as revealed by P2 and P3
The evoked response potential (ERP) procedure was used to investigate the representation of motion processes in different causal contexts, such as the collision of two squares or the repulsion of two magnets with like poles facing. Participants were required to judge whether each movement was plausible according to the causal context depicted by the cover story. Three main differences after the movement of the second object were found. First, the amplitudes at 70-170ms (N1) and 170-370ms (P2) elicited by a no-contact condition were more negative than a contact condition in the square context, whereas larger N1 and more positive amplitudes at 370-670ms were elicited by a no-contact condition…
Distinct neural-behavioral correspondence within face processing and attention networks for the composite face effect
The composite face effect (CFE) is recognized as a hallmark for holistic face processing, but our knowledge remains sparse about its cognitive and neural loci. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging with independent localizer and complete composite face task, we here investigated its neural-behavioral correspondence within face processing and attention networks. Complementing classical comparisons, we adopted a dimensional reduction approach to explore the core cognitive constructs of the behavioral CFE measurement. Our univariate analyses found an alignment effect in regions associated with both the extended face processing network and attention networks. Further representational simi…
Preparation and characterization of continuous fly ash derived glass fibers with improved tensile strength
Abstract The coal-based energy production in China generates more than 600 million tons of coal fly ash (CFA) each year, which drives us searching for new methods for recycling CFA. In this work, continuous glass fibers with a range of CFA (25–45%) were successfully prepared without showing any sign of fiber crystallization. The measured fiber tensile strength was found to increase with CFA proportionally. The fiber derived from 45% CFA exhibited the best tensile strength (higher than the E glass fiber prepared/tested under the same conditions) and good chemical stability (98% mass retention in the acid corrosion test). Our study shows a feasibility of making continuous CFA derived glass fi…
Modeling for the active site nitrate reductase. Oxidation of the complex [MovO(O2CC(S) CH3Ph)2]− by nitrate and nitrite in methanol
Abstract Under acid conditions the [MoVIO2(O2CC(S)CH1Ph)2]2 reacts with thiols to yield the monomeric [MoVO(O2CC(S)CH3Ph)2] and disulfide. The reduced complex [MoVO(O2CC(S)CH3Ph)2]− can react with NO3− and NO2− in a one-electron step yeilding respectively NO2 and NO and the original molybdenum (VI)-dioxo complex. The experimental pseudo-first-order rate constant with respect to the Mo(V) complex at 25°C was found to be kobs=2.3×10−4s−1 for NO3− and kobs=1.0×10−2 for NO2−. Oxo transfers to and from the substrate have been coupled to produce a catalytic system which turns over the reaction RSH+(No3− or NO2−)+H+a 1 2 [ RS ] 2 +( NO ] 2 or NO )+ H 2 O , in which thiols, NO1− and NO2− serve as a…
SINGLE-TRIAL BASED INDEPENDENT COMPONENT ANALYSIS ON MISMATCH NEGATIVITY IN CHILDREN
Independent component analysis (ICA) does not follow the superposition rule. This motivates us to study a negative event-related potential — mismatch negativity (MMN) estimated by the single-trial based ICA (sICA) and averaged trace based ICA (aICA), respectively. To sICA, an optimal digital filter (ODF) was used to remove low-frequency noise. As a result, this study demonstrates that the performance of the sICA+ODF and aICA could be different. Moreover, MMN under sICA+ODF fits better with the theoretical expectation, i.e., larger deviant elicits larger MMN peak amplitude.
The cumulative effect of positive and negative feedback on emotional experience
The cumulative effect of positive or negative feedback on subsequent emotional experiences remains unclear. Elucidating this effect could help individuals to better understand and accept the change in emotional experience, irrespective of when they or others receive consecutive positive or negative feedback. This study aimed to examine this effect on 37 participants using self-reported pleasantness and event-related potential data as indicators. After completing each trial, the participants received predetermined false feedback; they were then assessed on a nine-point pleasantness scale. There were 12 false feedback conditions categorized into three valence types. The positive type consiste…
Synthesis and characterization of molybdenum(VI)-dioxo complexes containing both coordinated thiolate and carboxylate groups. Reactions with their own free ligands
Abstract The synthesis, characterization and spectroscopic properties of a group of Mo(VI) complexes having thiocarboxylate ligands of type [MoVIO2(O2CC(S)MePh-X)2]2 have been reported (X = H, p-Me, p-Cl). The peak potential for the Mo(VI) reduction increasing according to the electron-donor ability of X (Me > H > Cl). Reaction of these Mo(VI) complexes with their own free ligands has been studied by ESR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, yielding the monomeric [MoVO(O2CC(S)MePh-X)2]− as unique complex products. The kinetic study of this oxidation reaction has also been investigated.
Oxytocin reduces romantic rejection-induced pain in online speed-dating as revealed by decreased frontal-midline theta oscillations
Abstract Background Romantic rejection is an emotionally distressful experience profoundly affecting life, possibly leading to mental illness or suicide. Oxytocin (OT) is a neuropeptide widely implicated in reducing physical pain and negative emotions; however, whether OT has an effect on reducing intense social pain (e.g., romantic rejection) remains unknown. Here, we tested the effect of OT on social pain and investigated its role in the outcome evaluation phase of social decision-making. Methods Electroencephalographic recordings were obtained between August 2nd and October 20th, 2020 in Shenzhen University from 61 healthy participants in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study with a b…
Effect of parametric variation of center frequency and bandwidth of morlet wavelet transform on time-frequency analysis of event-related potentials
Time-frequency (TF) analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs) using Complex Morlet Wavelet Transform has been widely applied in cognitive neuroscience research. It has been widely suggested that the center frequency (fc) and bandwidth (σ) should be considered in defining the mother wavelet. However, the issue how parametric variation of fc and σ of Morlet wavelet transform exerts influence on ERPs time-frequency results has not been extensively discussed in previous research. The current study, through adopting the method of Complex Morlet Continuous Wavelet Transform (CMCWT), aims to investigate whether time-frequency results vary with different parametric settings of fc and σ. Besides, …
Oxygen atom transfer reaction involving oxomolybdenum complexes with sterically bulky thiocarboxylate ligands and biochemical interesting substrates in methanol at neutral pH
Abstract Oxidation–reduction reactions of substrates in systems containing the complex [Mo VI O 2 (O 2 CC(S)CH 3 Ph) 2 ] 2− in methanol have been investigated as models of oxo-transfer reactions. At neutral pH, the [Mo VI O 2 (O 2 CC(S)CH 3 Ph) 2 ] 2− reacts with Me 2 PhP or n -butanethiol to yield a [Mo IV O(O 2 CC(S)CH 3 Ph) 2 ] 2− species and Me 2 PhPO or disulfide, respectively. The Mo IV O complex reduces a variety of substrates XO = Me 2 SO and pyridine N-oxide conducing formation of X = Me 2 S and pyridine. The occurrence of these reactions produces a catalytic system Me 2 PhP + XO → Me 2 PhPO + X and 2BuSH + XO → [BuS] 2 + X + H 2 O. In this work we have also included the study of …
Taking Familiar Others’ Perspectives to Regulate Our Own Emotion: An Event-Related Potential Study
Current research on emotion regulation has mainly focused on Gross’s cognitive strategies for regulating negative emotion; however, little attention has been paid to whether social cognitive processes can be used to regulate both positive and negative emotions. We considered perspective-taking as an aspect of social cognition, and investigated whether it would affect one’s own emotional response. The present study used a block paradigm and event-related potential (ERP) technology to explore this question. A 3 (perspective: self vs. pessimistic familiar other vs. optimistic familiar other) × 3 (valence: positive vs. neutral vs. negative) within-group design was employed. Thirty-six college s…

Acute stress impairs reward positivity effect in probabilistic learning
Decision making based on feedback learning requires a series of cognitive processes, including estimating the probability of particular outcomes and modulating expectations between expected versus actual outcomes. It has been suggested that stress affects decision making and subsequent processing of feedback valence and magnitude. However, less is known about the effect of acute stress on reward expectancy. In the current study, participants performed a probabilistic learning task, in which they learned an association between response and feedback within different reward expectancy trials (30% and 70%) under the conditions of stress (threat of shock) and safety (no shock). We recorded event…
Individual Independent Component Analysis on EEG: Event-Related Responses Vs. Difference Wave of Deviant and Standard Responses
Independent component analysis (ICA) is often used to spatially filter event-related potentials (ERPs). When an oddball paradigm is applied to elicit ERPs, difference wave (DW, responses of deviant stimuli minus those of standard ones) is often used to remove the common responses between the deviant and the standard. Thus, DW can be produced first, and then ICA is used to decompose the DW. Or, ICA is performed on responses of the deviant and standard stimuli separately, and then DW is applied on the filtered responses. In this study, we compared the two approaches to analyzing mismatch negativity (MMN). We found that DW introduced noise in the time and space domains, resulting in more diffi…
A computer‐based Pinyin intervention for disadvantaged children in China : Effects on Pinyin skills, phonological awareness, and character reading
Pinyin is an alphabetic script that denotes pronunciations of Chinese characters. Studies have shown that Pinyin instruction enhances both phonological awareness (e.g., Shu et al., Developmental Science, 2008, 11, 171–181) and character reading (e.g., Lin et al., Psychological Science, 2010, 21, 1117–1122) in Chinese children. In the present study, we provided a 3‐week Pinyin intervention with a computer‐based Pinyin GraphoGame to disadvantaged migrant children with poor Pinyin skills. A total of 252 first graders who were children of migrant workers in a large Chinese city were assessed to identify poor Pinyin readers. Fifty‐six 7‐year‐old children with poor Pinyin skills were selected and…

Reading Skills, Acquisition of: Cultural, Environmental, and Developmental Impediments
Reading acquisition is under the influence of the structure and function of the language itself, the individual's capacity to learn and the differential methods of instruction. Alphabetic languages vary from the bidirectionally consistent phoneme–grapheme–phoneme units of Finnish, to English as the most inconsistent for small units, but the latter of which increases in consistency as a function of increasing size of the unit (e.g., rime). Nonalphabetic Chinese places a heavy learning load through its inherently meaning-based logographic structure. Computer-assisted literacy training (e.g., GraphoGame) tailored to language features, teaching practices, and learner specific requirements can p…
Cluster Aggregation for Analyzing Event-Related Potentials
Topographic analysis are references independent for Event-Related Potentials (ERPs), and thus render statistically unambiguous results. This drives us to develop an effective clustering approach to finding temporal samples possessing similar topographies for analysing the temporal-spatial ERPs data. The previous study called CARTOOL used single clustering method to cluster ERP data. Indeed, given a clustering method, the quality of clustering varies with data and the number of clusters, motivating us to implement and compare multiple clustering algorithms via using multiple similarity measurements. By finding the minimum distance among the various clustering methods and selecting the most s…
A Two-Phase Model of Resource Allocation in Visual Working Memory
Two broad theories of visual working memory (VWM) storage have emerged from current research, a discrete slot-based theory and a continuous resource theory. However, neither the discrete slot-based theory or continuous resource theory clearly stipulates how the mental commodity for VWM (discrete slot or continuous resource) is allocated. Allocation may be based on the number of items via stimulus-driven factors, or it may be based on task demands via voluntary control. Previous studies have obtained conflicting results regarding the automaticity versus controllability of such allocation. In the current study, we propose a two-phase allocation model, in which the mental commodity could be al…
Supporting Acquisition of Spelling Skills in Different Orthographies Using an Empirically Validated Digital Learning Environment
This paper discusses how the association learning principle works for supporting acquisition of basic spelling and reading skills using digital game-based learning environment with the Finland-based GraphoLearn (GL) technology. This program has been designed and validated to work with early readers of different alphabetic writing systems using repetition and reinforcing connections between spoken and written units. Initially GL was developed and found effective in training children at risk of reading disorders in Finland. Today GL training has been shown to support learning decoding skills among children independent of whether they face difficulties resulting from educational, social, or bi…
Review of Abnormal Self-Knowledge in Major Depressive Disorder
Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is an affective disorder that is harmful to both physical and mental health. Abnormal self-knowledge, which refers to abnormal judgments about oneself, is a core symptom of depression. However, little research has summarized how and why patients with MDD differ from healthy individuals in terms of self-knowledge. Objective: To gain a better understanding of MDD, we reviewed previous studies that focused on the behavioral and neurological changes of self-knowledge in this illness. Main Findings: On the behavioral level, depressed individuals exhibited negative self-knowledge in an explicit way, while more heterogeneous patterns were reported in imp…
Development and Validation of a New Clinical Prediction Model of Catheter-Related Thrombosis Based on Vascular Ultrasound Diagnosis in Cancer Patients
Background: Central venous catheters are convenient for drug delivery and improved comfort for cancer patients, but they also cause serious complications. The most common complication is catheter-related thrombosis (CRT). Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and risk factors for CRT in cancer patients and develop an effective prediction model for CRT in cancer patients. Methods: The development of our prediction model was based on a retrospective cohort (n = 3,131) from the National Cancer Center. Our prediction model was confirmed in a prospective cohort from the National Cancer Center (n = 685) and a retrospective cohort from the Hunan Cancer Hospital (n = 61). The predi…
