The main objective of this essay is to comment upon the modes of production and the datings of the 5th century BC non-fractional silver coinage bearing the Greek legend ΠΑΝΟΡΜΟΣ (and variants) and the Punic legend ṣyṣ. The reconstruction of the die sequences published by G. Kenneth Jenkins in 1971 and its recent updates will be discussed in detail. As far as the identification of the issuing authority and of the minting place of the coins with legend ṣyṣ is concerned, for a long time to the center of the scientific research interests, only the inferences made from an analysis of the die sequence have been taken into consideration.
The excavations in Capo Soprano country at Gela (1999-2001) have hallowed to recover a living quarter, in which was a hoard of 17 bronze coins of Punic Sicily with female head and horse in front of palm-tree. The stratigraphic excavation of the quarter has permitted to find two living phases, sealed by collapsed roofs and walls. The excavation has supplied information concerning the relative chronology of the layers and the walls, while the stratigraphic association between pottery and coins offers information concerning the absolute chronology. These elements also make it possible to consider the siege of Gela by Agathokles (317-309 B.C.) as the terminus ante quem for the ancient phase. Si…

The review concerns Wolfgang R. Fischer-Bossert’s volume on monetary production of the master designers of Syracuse, which is an update of the work of Lauri O. Th.
The study analyzes five hoards from some indigenous centers of Sicily, paying particular attention above all to the methods of deposition and the context of discovery in order to advance reflections on their function and destination. Since these are complexes found in the vicinity or within sacred places, it is however possible to further circumscribe the interpretative possibilities. The scrap metal, in fact, as a form of accumulation of wealth, can act as a votive offering, probably cut to precise weight standards, or as a reserve of value of the sanctuary or even have the function of material used by foundries close to sacred places. Only the analysis of the context of discovery and the …
The last excavation (2004-2006) in the eastern necropolis of Polizzello (CL) allowed to complete the excavation of this important funerary area and to discover a grave (No 2/2004) containing over 100 dead children. It represents a privileged observatory for the study of childhood in the indigenous world of Sicily. The structure of the tomb, the relative and absolute chronology, the composition of the kit with its symbolic value and the mode of deposition of the buried are analyzed, thanks to the data of the stratigraphic excavation. The hypotheses on causes of deaths are based on anthropological and paleobiological studies conducted on skeletal finds, while some final considerations concern…
The main objective of this study is to make observations about the modes of production of the 5th century BC non-fractional silver coinage with the Greek legend Panormos (and variants) and with Punic legend ṣyṣ. The reconstruction of the dies sequences published by G. Kenneth Jenkins in 1971 and its recent updates will be considered above all. Instead, the identification of the issuing authority and the mint of the coins with legend ṣyṣ through the origin and the meaning of the term ṣyṣ and through the analysis of the bilingual emissions ṣyṣ -Panormos takes on a secondary importance. In this regard, only the suggestions that emerge from the examination of the succession of dies are collecte…
