A variant design of Tuned Mass Damper Inerter for reducing displacements of base isolated structures

In this study an innovative passive control strategy, referred to as New Tuned Mass Damper Inerter (New TMDI), coupled with a base isolation system (BI), is presented with the aim of reducing displacements in base isolated structures subject to seismic actions. The proposed New TMDI employs the synergetic benefits of a recently developed non-traditional Tuned Mass Damper (known as New TMD) and an inerter device to achieve higher control performances in isolated structures. Specifically, the New TMD is a secondary mass system connected to the BI system by a spring and to the ground by a dashpot. In addition, in the New TMDI configuration, the inerter device is placed in parallel with the dam…

Dynamic response of beams excited by moving oscillators: Approximate analytical solutions for general boundary conditions

In this paper, the dynamic response of an Euler-Bernoulli beam with general boundary conditions (BCs) and subject to a moving oscillator is examined. Notably, novel approximate closed-form expressions are determined for the vertical responses of both the beam and the moving oscillator, specifically considering the effect of damping in these systems, commonly omitted in standard approaches in the literature. In this regard, a modal superposition procedure is adopted and combined with an appropriate expansion-based approach of the dynamic response of the system, which naturally arises considering the oscillator-beam mass ratio to be reasonably small. Further, general boundary conditions are t…

Erratum: Search for photons with energies above 1018 eV using the hybrid detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory (Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (2017) 4 (9) DOI: 10.1088/1475-7516/2017/04/009)

1 Exposure calculation Due to a mistake in the numerical integration following eq. (6.2) of the original article [1], the exposure shown in figure 5 of the original article was incorrect. The correct exposure is shown in figure 1. 2 Upper limits on the integral photon flux and fraction The incorrect exposure affects the calculation of the upper limits on the integral photon flux following eq. (6.1) of the original article. The correct values for the upper limits are 0.038, 0.010, 0.009, 0.008 and 0.007 km−2 sr−1 yr−1 for threshold energies of 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 EeV. The correct values for the upper limits on the integral photon fraction subsequently derived are 0.14 %, 0.17 %, 0.42 %, 0.86 %…
