This ‘schoolscape’ is analysed as a display or materialization of the ‘hidden curriculum’ regarding the construction of linguistic and cultural identities. This study demonstrates how a single type of sign can be connected to language policy on a larger scale. Focusing on the relationship between language policy and language ideologies, I investigate the private Linguistic Landscape (LL) of Hungarians living in two villages in Slovakia. Through an examination of ‘beware of the dog’ signs, it is shown how such signs can be indicative of different language policies. In Slovakia, the Hungarian public LL is often referred to as a threat to the state language and public order. Signs in public space reflect ‘normalcy’ in a community. The authors ask what restricting signs tell us about a society? In order to explore the system and variation in the ways dog signs manifest different norms and control, they compare two different data sets: dog signs in a Northern European town, Jyväskylä in Finland, and two Eastern European villages in Romania. On the basis of photography and fieldwork, the linguistic landscape (LL) of the central square of Dunajská Streda/ Dunaszerdahely is analyzed. I focus on commercial names, which dominate the LL of the main square. The research site, a town in Slovakia of which population 80 % is Hungarian speaking, is significant, since historical minorities form the majority in very few European towns. Etäopetuspilotissa saamen kielten (pohjoissaame, inarinsaame, koltansaame) opetusta annetaan kaksi vuosiviikkotuntia perusopetusta ja lukiokoulutusta täydentävänä opetuksena. In the field of Linguistic Landscape research little attention has been paid to the situations where a minoritized group gives the regional majority, such as South-­‐West Slovakia where Hungarians form the majority.
