Acute Postcataract Surgery Endophthalmitis Due to Streptococcus Species Differs From Endophthalmitis Due to Staphylococcus Species at Presentation
Purpose: : To correlate the presenting clinical ophthalmic features with the bacterial identification in 100 patients with acute post catarcat endophthalmitis enrolled in the FRench Instutionnal ENdophthalmitis Study (FRIENDS).Methods: : Demographic data, past medical history and initial eye examination were recorded in a standardized form in 100 patients with acute endophthalmitis after cataract extraction (< 6 weeks) in a prospective multicenter study. Relationship between microbiological identification (using conventional cultures and panbacterial PCR) and clinical factors at baseline was studied using univariate (ANOVA).Results: : 100 patients were hospitalized for endophthalmitis treat…
Association of lipid-lowering drugs, anti-diabetic drugs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and levodopa with age-related macular degeneration in Europeans: A meta-analysis of the European Eye Epidemiology (E3) - consortium
Purpose : Changes in lipid metabolism, chronic inflammation and increased oxidative stress have been discussed as patho-etiogenetic drivers in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Systemic medication, such as lipid-lowering drugs (LLD) and anti-diabetic drugs, affect these pathways and may therefore also play a role in AMD pathogenesis. We aimed to investigate associations of commonly used systemic drugs with AMD prevalence in the European population. Methods : We included 38,694 adults from 14 population-based studies from the European Eye Epidemiology (E3) consortium. We performed multivariable logistic regression modelling to examine medication use association with prevalence of AMD as…

Incidence, Risk Factors and Outcomes of Submacular Hemorrhage with Loss of Vision in Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration in Daily Clinical Practice: the Fight Retinal Blindness! Registry
To evaluate the proportion, baseline predictors, and outcomes of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) patients treated with a high burden of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor intravitreal injections (IVT) at two years in routine clinical practice. European retrospective data analysis from a prospectively designed observational outcomes registry: the Fight Retinal Blindness! (FRB!) Project. Treatment-naïve eyes (one eye per patient) initiating VEGF inhibitors IVT from January 2017 to March 2020 with 24 months of follow-up, a minimum of 3 injections, and no gap between visits exceeding 365 days were tracked in the registry. We analyzed three treatment burden (…

Long-term intake of Lacticaseibacillus helveticus enhances bioavailability of omega-3 fatty acids in the mouse retina
Omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are required for the structure and function of the retina. They could also help to prevent or delay the development of retinopathies. Given the accumulating evidence showing the role of gut microbiota in regulating retinal physiology and host lipid metabolism, we evaluated the potential of long-term dietary supplementation with the Gram-positive bacterium Lacticaseibacillus helveticus strain VEL12193 to modulate the retinal n-3 PUFA content. A set of complementary approaches was used to study the impact of such a supplementation on the gut microbiota and host lipid/fatty acid (FA) metabolism. L. helv…
Ether-Lipids Are Involved in Retinal Vegf Expression and in Postnatal Hyaloid Vessel Regression
Purpose:Ether-lipids are phospholipids that represent about 13% of retinal lipids and whose exact functions remain unknown. However, the preferential esterification of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) at the sn-2 position of ether-lipids and their liberation by an ether-lipid-specific phospholipase A2 suggest their involvement in cell signaling processes. Based on the data showing the persistence of the hyaloid vasculature in ether-lipid-deficient mice (DAPAT-/- mice, Rodemer et al Hum Mol Genet 2003), we further investigated the molecular mechanisms by which ether-lipids may regulate hyaloid vessels regression during post-natal development. Methods:C57BL/6 mice were treated at birth eit…

Retinal Detachments Following Successful Idiopathic Macular Holes Surgery
Purpose: : To evaluate long term outcome of successfully operated idiopathic macular holes (IMH).Methods: : We conducted a comparative retrospective case series in two academic centers. IMH were operated with pars plana vitrectomy, intravitreal gas and internal limiting membrane peeling between 2002 and 2005. All these macular holes were analyzed with Stratus OCT before and after the surgery. We divided them into 4 groups: group 1: vitrectomy in pseudophakic eyes; group 2: vitrectomy and cataract extraction as a combined procedure; group 3: vitrectomy followed by cataract extraction; group 4: vitrectomy in pseudophakic eyes. We noted the anatomical and functional results and we studied seri…

Balance Sheet of Screening for Diabetic Retinopathy With a Mobile Non-Mydriatic Digital Camera in Burgundy, France
Purpose: To assess the economic balance-sheet of screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) with a mobile non-mydriatic digital camera in Burgundy, France, in a public health and economic perspective. Methods: The 72 lowest medicalised areas of Burgundy were visited. Retinal images were obtained with a non-mydriatic camera. To construct an economic model, we used available data on the prevalence of diabetes in Burgundy, the efficiency of the screening, the number of screened DR, blindness probability according to DR grading, the efficiency of laser therapy, the diabetic characteristics (gender, age, income, professional status and life expectancy) and medical costs induced by our campaign.Resul…
