Prevalence and associations of diabetic retinopathy in a large cohort of prediabetic subjects: The Gutenberg Health Study

Abstract Aims To evaluate the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy/maculopathy (DR/DMac) and its associations with cardiovascular risk factors (CRF) in participants with prediabetes (PwPD) in a large European cohort within the population-based Gutenberg Health Study (GHS). Methods The study was based on a sub-cohort of the GHS (n=5,000, age: 35–74 y). Prediabetes was diagnosed according to HbA 1c levels (5.7–6.4%). DR/DMac was graded from fundus photographs. Corneal curvature, a highly heritable trait, is a key clinical endophenotype for myopia - a major cause of visual impairment and blindness in the world. Here we present a trans-ethnic meta-analysis of corneal curvature GWAS in 44,042 individuals of Caucasian and Asian with replication in 88,218 UK Biobank data. We identified 47 loci (of which 26 are novel), with population-specific signals as well as shared signals across ethnicities.
