Nucleon mass and pion-nucleon sigma term from a chiral analysis of lattice QCD data

2013

The pion mass dependence of the nucleon mass within the covariant SU(2) baryon chiral perturbation theory both without and with explicit Delta(1232) degrees of freedom up to order p(4) is investigated. By fitting to a comprehensive set of lattice QCD data in 2 and 2 + 1 flavors from several collaborations, for pion masses M-pi < 420 MeV, we obtain low energy constants of natural size that are compatible with pion-nucleon scattering data. Our results are consistent with the rather linear pion mass dependence showed by lattice QCD. In the 2 flavor case we have also performed simultaneous fits to nucleon mass and sigma(pi N) data. As a result of our analysis, which encompasses the study of fin…

Antineutrino induced Λ(1405) production off the proton

2015

We have studied the strangeness-changing antineutrino-induced reactions ${\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{l}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{l}^{+}\ensuremath{\phi}B$, with $\ensuremath{\phi}B={K}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$, ${\overline{K}}^{0}n$, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{0}$, $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$, $\ensuremath{\eta}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{0}$, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$, ${K}^{+}{\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, and ${K}^{0}{\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{0}$, using a chiral unitary approach. Masses and magnetic moments of ground-state baryons in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory

2012

We report on some recent developments in our understanding of the light-quark mass dependence and the SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking corrections to the magnetic moments of the ground-state baryons in a covariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory, the so-called EOMS formulation. We show that this covariant ChPT exhibits some promising features compared to its heavy-baryon and infrared counterparts.

Consistency between SU(3) and SU(2) covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory for the nucleon mass

2017

Abstract Treating the strange quark mass as a heavy scale compared to the light quark mass, we perform a matching of the nucleon mass in the SU(3) sector to the two-flavor case in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. The validity of the 19 low-energy constants appearing in the octet baryon masses up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order [1] is supported by comparing the effective parameters (the combinations of the 19 couplings) with the corresponding low-energy constants in the SU(2) sector [2] . In addition, it is shown that the dependence of the effective parameters and the pion-nucleon sigma term on the strange quark mass is relatively weak around its physical value, thus pro…

Photon emission in neutral-current interactions at intermediate energies

2013

Neutral current photon emission reactions with nucleons and nuclei are studied. These processes are important backgrounds for nu_mu to nu_e (bar(nu)_mu to bar(nu)_e) appearance oscillation experiments where electromagnetic showers instigated by electrons (positrons) and photons are not distinguishable. At intermediate energies, these reactions are dominated by the weak excitation of the Delta(1232) resonance and its subsequent decay into Ngamma There are also non-resonant contributions that, close to threshold, are fully determined by the effective chiral Lagrangian of strong interactions. In addition, we have also included mechanisms mediated by nucleon excitations (N*) from the second res…

Weak pion production off the nucleon in covariant chiral perturbation theory

2018

Weak pion production off the nucleon at low energies has been systematically investigated in manifestly relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory with explicit inclusion of the $\Delta$(1232) resonance. Most of the involved low-energy constants have been previously determined in other processes such as pion-nucleon elastic scattering and electromagnetic pion production off the nucleon. For numerical estimates, the few remaining constants are set to be of natural size. As a result, the total cross sections for single pion production on neutrons and protons, induced either by neutrino or antineutrino, are predicted. Our results are consistent with the scarce existing experimental data ex…

Watson’s theorem and theNΔ(1232)axial transition

2016

We present a new determination of the $N\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ axial form factors from neutrino induced pion production data. For this purpose, the model of Hernandez et al. [Phys. Rev. D 76, 033005 (2007)] is improved by partially restoring unitarity. This is accomplished by imposing Watson's theorem on the dominant vector and axial multipoles. As a consequence, a larger ${C}_{5}^{A}(0)$, in good agreement with the prediction from the off-diagonal Goldberger-Treiman relation, is now obtained.

The nucleon mass and pion-nucleon sigma term from a chiral analysis ofNf= 2 lattice QCD world data

2014

We investigate the pion-mass dependence of the nucleon mass within the covariant SU (2) baryon chiral perturbation theory up to order p 4 with and without explicit Δ (1232) degrees of freedom. We fit lattice QCD data from several collaborations for 2 and 2+1 flavor ensembles. Here, we emphasize our N f = 2 study where the inclusion the Δ (1232) contributions stabilizes the fits. We correct for finite volume and spacing effects, set independently the lattice QCD scale by a Sommer-scale of r 0 = 0.493(23) fm and also include one σ π N lQCD data point at M π ≈ 290 MeV. We obtain low-energy constants of natural size which are compatible with the rather linear pion-mass dependence observed in la…

Single photon events from neutral current interactions at MiniBooNE

2014

The MiniBooNE experiment has reported results from the analysis of $\nu _e$ and $\bar \nu _e$ appearance searches, which show an excess of signal-like events at low reconstructed neutrino energies, with respect to the expected background. A significant component of this background comes from photon emission induced by (anti)neutrino neutral current interactions with nucleons and nuclei. With an improved microscopic model for these reactions, we predict the number and distributions of photon events at the MiniBooNE detector. Our results are compared to the MiniBooNE in situ estimate and to other theoretical approaches. We find that, according to our model, neutral current photon emission fro…

Neutrino induced weak pion production off the nucleon and coherent pion production in nuclei at low energies

2009

We present a microscopic model for neutrino induced one-pion production off the nucleon and its implementation for the purpose of calculating coherent pion production in nuclei. We further criticize the use of the Rein--Sehgal model for coherent pion production by low energy neutrinos. In particular, we show how the approximations in that model give rise to a much flatter differential cross section in the $\eta=E_\pi(1-\cos\theta_\pi)$ variable. We discuss the limitations intrinsic to any approach based on the partial conservation of the axial current hypothesis and the inability of such models to properly determine the angular distribution of the outgoing pion with respect to the direction…

Weak Strangeness and Eta Production

2013

We have studied strange particle production off nucleons through $\Delta S =0 $ and $|\Delta S| = 1$ channels, and specifically single kaon/antikaon, eta, associated particle production for neutrino/antineutrino induced processes as well as antineutrino induced single hyperon production processes. We have developed a microscopical model based on the SU(3) chiral Lagrangians. The basic parameters of the model are $f_\pi$, the pion decay constant, Cabibbo angle, the proton and neutron magnetic moments and the axial vector coupling constants for the baryons octet. For antikaon production we have also included $\Sigma^*(1385)$ resonance and for eta production $S_{11}(1535)$ and $S_{11}(1650)$ r…
