Accounting for more than half of the European Union's (EU) territory, agriculture ensures food production, manages important natural resources and supports socio-economic development of rural areas. Moreover, it is estimated that 50% of all plant and animal species (including some of that are listed in the EU Habitat Directive) depend on agricultural practices. The continuation of appropriate agricultural land management is essential to ensure these primary functions. Līdz šim Latvijas pārskati par tautas attīstību ir analizējuši svarīgas šī procesa sastāvdaļas – cilvēkdrošību, indivīda, valsts un privātā sek to ra partnerību, sociālo vienotību – un pētījuši tādus sociālos procesus (globalizācija, sabiedrības sociālā integrācija pārejas posmā u.c.), kuri būtiski ietekmē tautas attīstību. Šajā Pārskatā izvērtēta tautas attīstības norise reģionos.

Service provision and social cohesion in rural areas: interaction between commuting, mobility and the residential preferences in Latvia

The main issue addressed in this study is interaction of development policy of agricultural and rural areas with the regional and cohesion policies. This paper is based on an empirical study of everyday commuting models and spatial practices of different social groups of rural people in Latvia. This article analyzes data from a survey “Place, capabilities, migration” conducted in 2011 with a total of 1009 respondents in Latvia. The theoretical basis of research is rooted in the mobility studies and sociological and geographical conceptualization of space and place.
