A dual process model to predict adolescents’ screen time and physical activity
OBJECTIVE: Many adolescents report a lack of physical activity (PA) and excess screen time (ST). Psychological theories aiming to understand these behaviours typically focus on predictors of only one behaviour. Yet, behaviour enactment is often a choice between options. This study sought to examine predictors of PA and ST in a single model. Variables were drawn from dual process models, which portray behaviour as the outcome of deliberative and automatic processes. DESIGN: 411 Finnish vocational school students (age 17-19) completed a survey, comprising variables from the Reasoned Action Approach (RAA) and automaticity pertaining to PA and ST, and self-reported PA and ST four weeks later. M…
Eating behavior dimensions and 9-year weight loss maintenance : a sub-study of the Finnish Diabetes prevention study
Abstract Background Behavioral processes through which lifestyle interventions influence risk factors for type 2 diabetes (T2DM), e.g., body weight, are not well-understood. We examined whether changes in psychological dimensions of eating behavior during the first year of lifestyle intervention would mediate the effects of intervention on body weight during a 9-year period. Methods Middle-aged participants (38 men, 60 women) with overweight and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) were randomized to an intensive, individualized lifestyle intervention group (n = 51) or a control group (n = 47). At baseline and annually thereafter until nine years body weight was measured and the Three Factor Ea…
Parent–Infant Attachment Insecurity and Emotional Eating in Adolescence: Mediation through Emotion Suppression and Alexithymia
Contains fulltext : 233652.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Emotional eating (EE), the propensity to eat in response to emotions, is thought to have its origins in the early parent-infant relationship. This study tested the hypothesis that infant attachment insecurity results in EE in adolescence through the increased use of the emotion regulation strategy suppression of emotions and subsequent alexithymia. At the age of 15 months, parent-infant attachment security (n = 129) was observed with two abbreviated attachment measures: the shortened strange situation procedure (SSSP), and the shortened attachment Q-set (S-AQS). At the age of 12 years, children completed self-report questio…
"Ettei kiellä kiertämästä, neuvo niille muuta työtä" : kuva romaneista 1800-luvun loppupuolen ja vuosisadan vaihteen suomalaisessa kaunokirjallisuudessa ja sanomalehdissä
Pro gradu käsittelee kuvaa romaneista 1800-luvun loppupuolen ja vuosisadan vaihteen suomalaisessa kaunokirjallisuudessa ja sanomalehtiaineistossa. Romanit olivat 1800-luvun loppupuolen Suomessa muusta väestöstä erottuva ryhmä, jonka kiertävä ja epäkristillinen elämäntapa haluttiin muuttaa. He olivat toiminnan kohteita, johon liittyi vahvasti negatiivinen yhteiskunnallinen diskurssi. Tähän tilanteeseen suhteutettuna halusin pro gradussani tutkia millainen kuva romaneista rakentuu tuon ajan kirjallisuudessa ja sanomalehdissä? Millaiset piirteet korostuvat, millainen kuvauksen sävy on? Tutkimus ei siis käsittele poliittisia toimia, muuten kuin romanien yleisen, yhteiskunnallisen aseman hahmott…
