Urinary dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease patients
Background: Autonomic nervous system dysfunction that affects 70–80% of Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients, causes significant morbidity and it is correlated with poor quality of life. Objective: We assessed in a consecutive series of PD patients frequency of autonomic symptoms by means of the Scale for Outcomes for Parkinson’s disease AUTonomic (SCOPA-AUT) and we correlated it with the results of noninvasive urological studies (nUS). Methods: PD patients with known conditions that might have influenced urinary function were excluded. Clinical assessment of PD patients included the H&Y staging, UPDRS, BDI, NPI, PDQ- 39, PDSS, ESS, and the SCOPA-AUT scale. nUS consisted of uroflowmetry an…
Proteins in amorphous saccharide matrices: Structural and dynamical insights on bioprotection
Bioprotection by sugars, and in particular trehalose peculiarity, is a relevant topic due to the implications in several fields. The underlying mechanisms are not yet clearly elucidated, and remain the focus of current investigations. Here we revisit data obtained at our lab on binary sugar/water and ternary protein/sugar/water systems, in wide ranges of water content and temperature, in the light of the current literature. The data here discussed come from complementary techniques (Infrared Spectroscopy, Molecular Dynamics simulations, Small Angle X-ray Scattering and Calorimetry), which provided a consistent description of the bioprotection by sugars from the atomistic to the macroscopic …
MULTIBODY NUMERICAL SIMULATION FOR VEHICLE – PEDESTRIAN CRASH TEST
The purpose of this paper is the simulation of vehicle – pedestrian crash test, executed by Visual Nastran. The evaluation of the damage caused to pedestrian is obtained following the EURONCAP directive. The vehicle virtual model, DIMA, follows closely the characteristics of a saloon car belonging to the small cars category. A total of 16 simulation tests are conduced; each characterized by different initial conditions. The vehicle advances with several speeds, at constant speed and in braking. The anthropomorphic model Dummy impacts with the vehicle in lateral or perfectly frontal position with respect to the front of the vehicle.

Sodium butyrate induces apoptosis in human hepatoma cells by a mitochondria/caspase pathway, associated with degradation of beta-catenin, pRb and Bcl-XL.
Butyrate can promote programmed cell death in a number of tumour cells in vitro. This paper provides evidence that butyrate induces apoptosis in human hepatoma HuH-6 and HepG2 cells but is ineffective in Chang liver cells, an immortalised non-tumour cell line. In both HuH-6 and HepG2 cells, apoptosis appeared after a lag period of approximately 16 h and increased rapidly during the second day of treatment. In particular, the effect was stronger in HuH-6 cells, which were, therefore, chosen for ascertaining the mechanism of butyrate action. In HuH-6 cells, beta-catenin seemed to exert an important protective role against apoptosis, since pretreatment with beta-catenin antisense ODN reduced t…
