Summary Report of MINSIS Workshop in Madrid

2010

Recent developments on tau detection technologies and the construction of high intensity neutrino beams open the possibility of a high precision search for non-standard {\mu} - {\tau} flavour transition with neutrinos at short distances. The MINSIS - Main Injector Non-Standard Interaction Search- is a proposal under discussion to realize such precision measurement. This document contains the proceedings of the workshop which took place on 10-11 December 2009 in Madrid to discuss both the physics reach as well as the experimental requirements for this proposal.

Neutrino interaction classification with a convolutional neural network in the DUNE far detector

2020

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment is a next-generation neutrino oscillation experiment that aims to measure CP-violation in the neutrino sector as part of a wider physics program. A deep learning approach based on a convolutional neural network has been developed to provide highly efficient and pure selections of electron neutrino and muon neutrino charged-current interactions. The electron neutrino (antineutrino) selection efficiency peaks at 90% (94%) and exceeds 85% (90%) for reconstructed neutrino energies between 2–5 GeV. The muon neutrino (antineutrino) event selection is found to have a maximum efficiency of 96% (97%) and exceeds 90% (95%) efficiency for reconstructed neutrino…

NO nu A plus T2K: The race for the neutrino mass hierarchy

2006

The determination of the ordering of the neutrino masses (the hierarchy) is probably a crucial prerequisite to understand the origin of lepton masses and mixings and to establish their relationship to the analogous properties in the quark sector. Here, we follow an alternative strategy to the usual neutrino--antineutrino comparison in long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments: we exploit the combination of the neutrino-only data from the NOvA and the T2K experiments by performing these two off-axis experiments at different distances but at the same $/L$, where $$ is the mean neutrino energy and $L$ is the baseline. This would require a minor adjustment to the proposed off-axis angle fo…

Neutrino oscillation probabilities through the looking glass

2019

In this paper we review different expansions for neutrino oscillation probabilities in matter in the context of long-baseline neutrino experiments. We examine the accuracy and computational efficiency of different exact and approximate expressions. We find that many of the expressions used in the literature are not precise enough for the next generation of long-baseline experiments, but several of them are while maintaining comparable simplicity. The results of this paper can be used as guidance to both phenomenologists and experimentalists when implementing the various oscillation expressions into their analysis tools.

Physics Potential of the Fermilab NuMI beamline

2005

We explore the physics potential of the NuMI beamline with a detector located 10 km off-axis at a distant site (810 km). We study the sensitivity to $\sin^2 2 \theta_{13}$ and to the CP-violating parameter $\sin \delta$ as well as the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy by exploiting the $\nu_\mu \to \nu_e$ and $\bar{\nu}_\mu \to \bar{\nu}_e$ appearance channels. The results are illustrated for three different experimental setups to quantify the benefits of increased detector sizes, proton luminosities and $\nu_e$ detection efficiencies.

Unified Graphical Summary of Neutrino Mixing Parameters

2003

The neutrino mixing parameters are presented in a number of different ways by the various experiments, e.g. SuperKamiokande, K2K, SNO, KamLAND and Chooz and also by the Particle Data Group. In this paper, we argue that presenting the data in terms of $\sin^2 \theta$, where $\theta$ is the mixing angle appropriate for a given experiment has a direct physical interpretation. For current atmospheric, solar and reactor neutrino experiments, the $\sin^2 \theta$'s are effectively the probability of finding a given flavor in a particular neutrino mass eigenstate. The given flavor and particular mass eigenstate varies from experiment to experiment, however, the use of $\sin^2 \theta$ provides a uni…

Untangling CP violation and the mass hierarchy in long baseline experiments

2004

In the overlap region, for the normal and inverted hierarchies, of the neutrino-antineutrino bi-probability space for $\nu_\mu \to \nu_e$ appearance, we derive a simple identity between the solutions in the ($\sin^2 2\theta_{13}$, $\sin \delta$) plane for the different hierarchies. The parameter $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}$ sets the scale of the $\nu_\mu \to \nu_e$ appearance probabilities at the atmospheric $\delta m^2_{atm} \approx 2.4 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ whereas $\sin \delta $ controls the amount of CP violation in the lepton sector. The identity between the solutions is that the difference in the values of $\sin \delta$ for the two hierarchies equals twice the value of $\sqrt{\sin^2 2\theta…

CP violation and neutrino oscillations

2007

We review the basic mechanisms of neutrino mass generation and the corresponding structure of the lepton mixing matrix. We summarize the status of three-neutrino oscillation parameters as determined from current observations, using state-of-the-art solar and atmospheric neutrino fluxes, as well as latest experimental data as of September 2007. We also comment on recent attempts to account for these results and to understand flavour from first principles. We discuss extensively the prospects for probing the strength of CP violation in two near term accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments, T2K and NOvA, as well as possible extensions such as T2KK and a second large off-axis detector near…
