Knee arthroscopy and exercise versus exercise only for chronic patellofemoral pain syndrome: a randomized controlled trial.

Abstract Background Arthroscopy is often used to treat patients with chronic patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). As there is a lack of evidence, we conducted a randomized controlled trial to study the efficacy of arthroscopy in patients with chronic PFPS. Methods A total of 56 patients with chronic PFPS were randomized into two treatment groups: an arthroscopy group (N = 28), treated with knee arthroscopy and an 8-week home exercise program, and a control group (N = 28), treated with the 8-week home exercise program only. Objective This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of brief training in the guideline-oriented biopsychosocial management of low-back pain (LBP) in occupational health services using a cluster-randomized design. A small sample of physiotherapists and physicians from the intervention units (N=12) were given three- to seven-day training focusing on the biopsychosocial management of LBP, while professionals in the control units (N=15) received no such training. Lumbar spine mobility in Marfan syndrome

Low back pain symptoms and lumbar spine mobility were assessed by questionnaires and by clinical and radiological measurements in 32 patients with Marfan syndrome. Frequently occurring low back pain was reported by 19% of the patients, but the disability was slight in all of them. Flexion and extension mobility of the lumbar spine (L1-S1) assessed from radiographs was 59.9 degrees and 13.2 degrees, respectively. Mean lumbar angular mobility between flexion and extension radiographs was 7.4 degrees at L1-2, 13.2 degrees at L2-3, 16.0 degrees at L3-4, 19.3 degrees at L4-5 and 18.3 degrees at L5-S1. Objective To study the long-term outcome of arthroscopy in patients with chronic patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), the authors conducted a randomised controlled trial. The authors also investigated factors predicting the outcome in patients with PFPS. Methods Fifty-six patients with PFPS were randomised into two groups: an arthroscopy group (N=28), treated with knee arthroscopy and an 8-week home exercise programme, and a control group (N=28), treated with a similar 8-week home exercise programme only.
