Search for Superheavy Elements — A Status Report
A survey is given of nuclear and chemical properties in the predicted island of spherical superheavy nuclei around element 114 and of recent attempts to produce such nuclei by transfer and fusion reactions.
On the Correlations Between Constitution and Scintillation Properties in the p-Oligophenylene Series
Abstract The paper deals with the problem: What properties are requested from an organic scintillator solute and what structural principles are given to realize, or at least to influence them especially by looking at the p-oligophenylene series? According to their importance and also in respect to more or less special purposes one can distinguish the following sequence: 1) An organic scintillator solute must have a sufficient solubility in all types of solvents used for this counting method. As a result of extensive systematic studies substitution of larger alkyl groups has been recognized as a very effective principle of solubilization. Rapid Radiochemical Separation Procedures from Aqueous Solutions
The state-of-the-art in the field of rapid radiochemical separation procedures is illustrated by two systems using aqueous solutions as input: ARCA, an apparatus for repetitive separations, and SISAK, a centrifuge system for continuous separations. Applications presented are: Solvent extraction of element 105 investigated with 34-s 262105 using ARCA, and decay scheme studies of the fission product 1.0-s 110Tc by means of SISAK.
Systematics of neutron emission probabilities from delayed neutron precursors
A simple correlation based on the gross theory ofβ-decay is derived between the neutron emission probabilitiesPn of delayed neutron precursors, theirβ-decay energies and the neutron binding energies of the daughter nuclei. The correlation is shown to be valid for delayed neutron precursors among the fission products. ThePn-values of several expected but still unidentified neutron precursors are estimated together with their contributions to the delayed neutron groups in thermal-neutron induced fission of235U. Some aspects of theβ-strength function for transitions into highly excited states are discussed.
