Using evolutionary algorithms to model relativistic jets
High-resolution Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry observations of NGC 1052 show a two sided jet with several regions of enhanced emission and a clear emission gap between the two jets. This gap shrinks with increasing frequency and vanishes around $\nu\sim43$ GHz. The observed structures are due to both the macroscopic fluid dynamics interacting with the surrounding ambient medium including an obscuring torus and the radiation microphysics. In this paper we investigate the possible physical conditions in relativistic jets of NGC 1052 by directly modelling the observed emission and spectra via state-of-the-art special-relativistic hydrodynamic (SRHD) simulations and radiative transfer calcula…
Stability of hydrodynamical relativistic planar jets : II. Long-term nonlinear evolution
In this paper we continue our study of the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability in relativistic planar jets following the long-term evolution of the numerical simulations which were introduced in Paper I. The models have been classified into four classes (I to IV) with regard to their evolution in the nonlinear phase, characterized by the process of jet/ambient mixing and momentum transfer. Models undergoing qualitatively different non-linear evolution are clearly grouped in well-separated regions in a jet Lorentz factor/jet-to-ambient enthalpy diagram. Jets with a low Lorentz factor and small enthalpy ratio are disrupted by a strong shock after saturation. Those with a large Lorentz factor an…
Resonant Kelvin-Helmholtz modes in sheared relativistic flows
Qualitatively new aspects of the (linear and non-linear) stability of sheared relativistic (slab) jets are analyzed. The linear problem has been solved for a wide range of jet models well inside the ultrarelativistic domain (flow Lorentz factors up to 20; specific internal energies $\approx 60c^2$). As a distinct feature of our work, we have combined the analytical linear approach with high-resolution relativistic hydrodynamical simulations, which has allowed us i) to identify, in the linear regime, resonant modes specific to the relativistic shear layer ii) to confirm the result of the linear analysis with numerical simulations and, iii) more interestingly, to follow the instability develo…
LOFAR measures the hotspot advance speed of the high-redshift blazar S5 0836+710
Our goal is to study the termination of an AGN jet in the young universe and to deduce physical parameters of the jet and the intergalactic medium. We use LOFAR to image the long-wavelength radio emission of the high-redshift blazar S5 0836+710 on arcsecond scales between 120 MHz and 160 MHz. The LOFAR image shows a compact unresolved core and a resolved emission region about 1.5 arcsec to the southwest of the radio core. This structure is in general agreement with previous higher-frequency radio observations with MERLIN and the VLA. The southern component shows a moderately steep spectrum with a spectral index of about $\gtrsim -1$ while the spectral index of the core is flat to slightly i…
Influence of Internal Energy on the Stability of Relativistic Flows
A set of simulations concerning the influence of internal energy on the stability of relativistic jets is presented. Results show that perturbations saturate when the amplitude of the velocity perturbation approaches the speed of light limit. Also, contrary to what predicted by linear stability theory, jets with higher specific internal energy appear to be more stable.
Physical Parameters in Relativistic Jets from Compact Symmetric Objects
Compact symmetric objects (CSOs) conform a class of sources characterized by high luminosity radio emission located symmetrically on both sides of the active galactic nucleus on linear scales of less than 1 kpc. Given their small size, the hot spots of the jets in CSOs provide a unique laboratory for the study of the physics of relativistic jets and their environment close to the central engine. We present a simple model for the hot spots in CSOs assuming synchrotron emission, minimum energy and ram-pressure equilibrium with the external medium. Further comparison of our model with observational data allows us to constrain the physical parameters in the hot spots and the jets feeding them, …
Studies of Relativistic Jets in Active Galactic Nuclei with SKA
Relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are among the most powerful astrophysical objects discovered to date. Indeed, jetted AGN studies have been considered a prominent science case for SKA, and were included in several different chapters of the previous SKA Science Book (Carilli & Rawlings 2004). Most of the fundamental questions about the physics of relativistic jets still remain unanswered, and await high-sensitivity radio instruments such as SKA to solve them. These questions will be addressed specially through analysis of the massive data sets arising from the deep, all-sky surveys (both total and polarimetric flux) from SKA1. Wide-field very-long-baseline-interferometri…
Physical properties of the jet in 0836+710 revealed by its transversal structure(Corrigendum)
Perucho & Lobanov (2007) (PL07, from now on) presented results demonstrating that the jet in 0836+710 has a significant velocity shear layer. These authors used a set of jet parameters found by Lobanov et al. (1998) (including Lorentz factor γ = 11, Mach number Mj = 6, and jet/ambient medium density ratio ρj/ρa = 0.04). They studied different characteristic wavelengths that may develop in a jet with both a thin ( 10% of the jet radius) and a thick shear-ayer ( 60% of the jet radius). The result showed that the observed wavelengths in the jet structure could be more easily explained in terms of a transversally stratified jet. A mistake was, however made in PL07: the equation used to convert …
Interstellar travel guide : chronicles of a violent universe
In contrast to observations from our local viewpoint, the universe is extremely violent. Explosions of massive stars, X-ray and gamma-ray binary stars, and active galaxies are related to the presence of compact objects such as neutron stars or black holes. Processes such as matter accretion or the formation and release of relativistic plasma jets are responsible for the generation of large amounts of high-energy radiation, caused by the acceleration of elementary particles, and have a significant impact in their surroundings. Moreover, they are related to the generation of gravitational waves: vibrations in spacetime produced by the acceleration of compact massive objects that produce stron…
A Dynamical Model for the Evolution of Hot Spots in Powerful Radio Sources
AbstractCompact symmetric objects are considered the young counterparts of large doubles according to advance speeds measured or inferred from spectral ageing. Here we present a simple power law model for the CSO/FR II evolution based on the study of sources with well defined hot spots. The luminosity of the hot spots is estimated under minimum energy conditions. The advance of the source is considered to proceed in ram pressure equilibrium with the ambient medium. Finally, we also assume that the jets feeding the hot spots are relativistic and have a time dependent power. Comparison with observational data points to an interpretation of the CSO–FR II evolution in terms of decreasing jet po…
Physical Parameters in the Hot Spots and Jets of Compact Symmetric Objects
We present a model to determine the physical parameters of jets and hot spots of a sample of CSOs under very basic assumptions like synchrotron emission and minimum energy conditions. Based on this model we propose a simple evolutionary scenario for these sources assuming that they evolve in ram pressure equilibrium with the external medium and constant jet power. The parameters of our model are constrained from fits of observational data (radio luminosity, hot spot radius and hot spot advance speed) versus projected linear size. From these plots we conclude that CSOs evolve self-similarly and that their radio luminosity increases with linear size along the first kiloparsec. Assuming that t…
Stability of hydrodynamical relativistic planar jets
The effects of relativistic dynamics and thermodynamics in the development of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in planar, relativistic jets along the early phases (namely linear and saturation phases) of evolution has been studied by a combination of linear stability analysis and high-resolution numerical simulations for the most unstable first reflection modes in the temporal approach. Three different values of the jet Lorentz factor (5, 10 and 20) and a few different values of specific internal energy of the jet matter (from 0.08 to $60.0 c^2$) have been considered. Figures illustrating the evolution of the perturbations are also shown.
Nonlinear stability of relativistic sheared planar jets
The linear and non-linear stability of sheared, relativistic planar jets is studied by means of linear stability analysis and numerical hydrodynamical simulations. Our results extend the previous Kelvin-Hemlholtz stability studies for relativistic, planar jets in the vortex sheet approximation performed by Perucho et al. (2004a,b) by including a shear layer between the jet and the external medium and more general perturbations. The models considered span a wide range of Lorentz factors ($2.5-20$) and internal energies ($0.08 c^2-60 c^2$) and are classified into three classes according to the main characteristics of their long-term, non-linear evolution. We observe a clear separation of thes…
