Foot Orthosis in Running

Abstract Foot orthosis is a popular strategy for runners aiming to reduce the injury risk and improve performance in running. Companies of foot orthosis claim for a high number of benefits, however, the literature is controversy in many aspects and there are not systematic results because of the use of them. The aim of this chapter is, firstly, to introduce the reader about the concept of foot orthosis and its different definitions and types. Secondly, to show the most important scientific literature about its biomechanical and physiological effects during running. These biomechanical and physiological effects were divided into the following sections in order to be clear for the reader: kin…

Application of Infrared Thermography in the Assessment of Sport Equipment

Abstract Infrared thermography is a noninvasive imaging technique used to determine surface temperatures under controlled conditions. This technique has many applications in different fields, the assessment of sport equipment being one of them. This chapter aims to provide a general overview of the scientific literature regarding the application of infrared thermography for the assessment of sport equipment. Some examples are provided based on the recent literature and the background experience of the chapter authors in the use of infrared thermography in sport. Examples include the monitoring of formula one (F1) tires during racing, detection of technological doping in cycling, saddle fit …

Compression Garments in Sport

Abstract In this chapter we summarize the main scientific information regarding the applications of compression garments in sports. This chapter covers the discussion from the clinical compression’s application in patients to how its use has been extended to sport. In addition, the composition and different kinds of textiles are considered regarding the level of compression and methodologies/standards for its classification. The chapter is organized in sections considering the effects of compression garments on physiological, psychological, strength, power, endurance, and muscle activation parameters, and ends with indications of future research directions and methodological aspects regardi…

Soccer players' fitting perception of different upper boot materials.

[EN] The present study assessed the influence of upper boot materials on fitting perception. Twenty players tested three soccer boots only differing in the upper boot material (natural calf leather, natural kangaroo leather and synthetic leather). Players reported fitting perception and preference on specific foot areas using a perceived fitting scale. Ratings were averaged for every foot area. Repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze the differences between boots. The kangaroo leather boots were perceived tighter and closer to the preferred fitting in general fitting, metatarsals area and instep area. The synthetic leather boots were perceived as the loosest and as the most distant boot…

Effects of graduated compression stockings on skin temperature after running.

High skin temperatures reduce the thermal gradient between the core and the skin and they can lead to a reduction in performance and increased risk of injury. Graduated compression stockings have become popular among runners in the last years and their use may influence the athlete's thermoregulation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of graduated compression stockings on skin temperature during running in a moderate indoor environment. Forty-four runners performed two running tests lasting 30min (10min of warm-up and 20min at 75% of their maximal aerobic speed) with and without graduated compressive stockings. Skin temperature was measured in 12 regions of interest on th…
