SARS-CoV-2 vaccination modelling for safe surgery to save lives: data from an international prospective cohort study
Abstract Background Preoperative SARS-CoV-2 vaccination could support safer elective surgery. Vaccine numbers are limited so this study aimed to inform their prioritization by modelling. Methods The primary outcome was the number needed to vaccinate (NNV) to prevent one COVID-19-related death in 1 year. NNVs were based on postoperative SARS-CoV-2 rates and mortality in an international cohort study (surgical patients), and community SARS-CoV-2 incidence and case fatality data (general population). NNV estimates were stratified by age (18–49, 50–69, 70 or more years) and type of surgery. Best- and worst-case scenarios were used to describe uncertainty. Results NNVs were more favourable in su…
Early outcomes and complications following cardiac surgery in patients testing positive for coronavirus disease 2019: An international cohort study
The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndromecoronavirus-2, the cause of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in December 2019 represented a global emergency accounting for more than 2.5 million deaths worldwide.1 It has had an unprecedented influence on cardiac surgery internationally, resulting in cautious delivery of surgery and restructuring of services.2 Understanding the influence of COVID-19 on patients after cardiac surgery is based on assumptions from other surgical specialties and single-center studies. The COVIDSurg Collaborative conducted a multicenter cohort study, including 1128 patients, across 235 hospitals, from 24 countries demonstrating perioperative COVID-19 infection…
A methodology for the environmental comparison of metal shaping technologies: an in-depth analysis on recycling related issues
The reduction of CO2 emissions is an urgent objective to pursue. The scientific and the industrial world have gathered such challenge, starting to find out energy- and resource-efficient manufacturing strategies. From the literature review, in the domain of environmental impact analysis of manufacturing processes, two relevant knowledge gaps can be spotted: (1) the metal forming processes (and, in particular, the bulk forming processes) are still not well documented, and (2) there is a lack of systematic and comparative studies on energy and material flows enabling the identification of environmentally-friendly manufacturing design strategies. This research offers a contribution to a better…
Sheet incremental forming: a new process configuration allowing controlled flow of the sheet material under the blank-holder
An experimental campaign to investigate sustainability issues in Single Point Incremental Forming processes
Sustainability issues are crucial topics in manufacturing and the environmental burdens reduction for processes is highly requested. In particular, the environmental sustainability evaluation for sheet metal forming processes is an widely investigated topic since there is still a lack of knowledge on modeling issues. The main tasks are related to a more efficient materials use and to energy savings. Moreover, forming technologies environmental impacts are essentially process-dependent. A deep analysis of the cause-effect linkages (between process and material parameters and energy consumption, for instance), within each process, would be necessary to properly model environmental impacts and…

A preliminary comparison between finite element and meshless simulations of extrusion
In this paper the extrusion process of a cross-shaped profile was investigated. In particular, the study was focused on the distortion of extruding profiles when the workpiece and die axis are not aligned. The process was simulated using the finite element method (FEM) and the natural element method (NEM), both implemented in an updated-Lagrangian formulation, in order to avoid the burden associated with the description of free surfaces in ALE or Eulerian formulations. Furthermore, an experimental equipment was developed in order to obtain reliable data in terms of deformed entity, required process load and calculated pressure. At the end, a comparison between the numerical predictions and …
