Diflubenzuron-Induced alterations during in vitro development ofTenebrio molitor pupal integument

The effects of diflubenzuron (DFB) in Tenebrio molitor pupae were first investigated on cuticle secretion induced by 20-hydroxyecdysone in vitro. The sternal integuments were treated by DFB either 3 days before culture or during culture. DFB, when applied before culture, did not prevent the molting hormone from inducing a new cuticle deposition by integument explants in vitro. However, this cuticle showed several architectural alterations and a thickness reduction. When applied during the culture in the presence of 20-hydroxyecdysone, DFB at high dose (≥ 20 μg/ml) was able to inhibit cuticle secretion, but lower doses (⩽ 10 μg/ml) resulted in epicuticle deposition. Morphogenesis of the wing Anlagen in the mealworm beetle tenebrio molitor during the last larval instar.

The wing Anlagen of Tenebrio develop from epidermal cells located on the lateral margins of meso- and metathoraces. Three to four days after larval ecdysis, these cells start to proliferate slowly, continuing to do so until day 13 which corresponds to the period of the pupal commitment of the remaining epidermis. The wing Anlagen cells then proliferate rapidly until day 18.5. Three days before pupal ecdysis, the mitotic index falls suddenly while 40% of the Anlagen cells disappear owing to cell degeneration. 2-Deoxyecdysone is a circulating ecdysteroid in the beetle Zophobas atratus

A qualitative analysis of ecdysteroids has been performed during the post-embryonic development of the tenebrionid beetle, Zophobas atratus, by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) combined with enzyme immunoassay (EIA) using two different antibodies. Three HPLC peaks were found to be immunoreactive, in hemolymph extracts of both sexes. Moreover, these peaks had ecdysteroid-like UV spectra, determined using a photodiode array detector. Development of the wing discs of Zophobas atratus under natural and experimental conditions: occurrence of a gradual larval-pupal commitment in the epidermis of tenebrionid beetles.

Using light and electron microscopy, we studied the development of the wing discs in the large beetle Zophobas atratus, under natural and experimental conditions. A reversible differentiation of the wing discs is usually observed during supernumerary instars of crowded larvae. Juvenile hormone analog (JHA) application during the wandering period or compelled experimental crowding during the larval-pupal switchover – or commitment – inhibits the onset of metamorphosis. Isolation, followed by recrowding, also induces the disc cells to secrete unusual cuticular material. Abstract Pupation in Zophobas atratus is dependent on isolation and this provides a model for study of the onset of metamorphosis in beetles. We have analyzed the effects of isolation vs grouping on certain developmental parameters; the number of larval instars; their duration and weight. Sex differences were detected, such as the occurrence of regressive moults in females. Moreover, the development of Z. atratus is discussed in relation to Tenebrio molitor , the physiological timing of which appeared in part extendable to Z. atratus . Ultrastructure of posterior sternal glands of Macrotermes annandalei (Silvestri): new members of the sexual glandular set found in termites (Insecta).

In female alates of Macrotermes annandalei, two types of abdominal glands are involved in the secretion of sex pheromone. Tergal glands are found at the anterior margin of tergites 6-10 and posterior sternal glands (PSGs) are located at the anterior margin of sternites 6-7. The cytological features of both types of glands are quite similar. The fine structural organization of PSGs is studied more precisely and described for the first time. The fine structural organization of sternal glands of pseudergates and workers in termites (Isoptera): a comparative survey

Orchestin, a calcium-binding phosphoprotein, is a matrix component of two successive transitory calcified biomineralizations cyclically elaborated by a terrestrial crustacean.

Orchestia cavimana is a crustacean that cyclically replaces its calcified cuticle during molting cycles in order to grow. Its terrestrial way of life requires storage of calcium during each premolt period, as calcareous concretions, in tubular diverticula of the midgut. During the postmolt period the stored calcium is reabsorbed and is translocated through the storage organ epithelium as calcified small spherules. Variability of ecdysteroid-induced cell cycle alterations in Drosophila Kc sublines.

. The cell cycle of two lines isolated from Drosophila Kc cells was followed by flow cytofluorometry and cell counting. The first line is the 8-9K clone which grew in a medium supplemented with 5% serum; the second, named subline Kc0, grew in a serum-free medium. The stationary phase is characterized by a G2 cell accumulation: 73% in the 8-9K clone and 50% in the Kc0 subline. When the medium was supplemented with the steroid moulting hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone, more than 90% of 8-9K cells and 65% of Kc0 cells were progressively arrested in G2. Abstract Philonthus and other genera of Philonthina possess a pair of prototergal glands located in the first abdominal tergum and hidden at rest by hind wings and elytra. In Philonthus varians they occupy the whole length of the tergum and form a pouch-like invaginated reservoir with a scaly glandular zone and a smooth outlet.
