Resonances in the electron impact excitation of metastable states of mercury

Metastable excitation of mercury by electron impact is studied at energies up to the first ionisation potential using an energy selected electron beam with an energy spread of 50 meV FWHM. A great number of resonances is observed in the excitation function. Agreement is good on the whole with a recent relativisticR-matrix calculation and with a former analysis of resonances in the elastic cross section.

The angular dependence of polarizationP(Θ) of electrons elastically scattered by a beam of mercury atoms is measured in a double scattering experiment for electron energies of 0,9; 1,2; and 1,5 keV. The results are compared with theory and found to be in good agreement. Maximum degree of polarization measured isP=0,53±0,10 (electron current 10−12A).

A source of polarized electrons based on photoemission of GaAsP.

Abstract The source described is based on photoemission of electrons from 100-GaAs0.62P0.38 activated to negative electron affinity. It is built to inject a beam of polarized electrons into the 350 MeV linear accelerator in Mainz. It is capable of delivering a mean current of 28 μA spin-polarized longitudinally to a degree of 0.44. The lifetime of the cathode under operational conditions is better than 200 h. The source was successfully run in a parity experiment, in which the analysing power of quasielastic scattering from beryllium for longitudinally polarized electrons was measured.

Photoemission of spin-polarized electrons from negative electron affinity GaAsP

GaAs0.62P0.38 activated to negative electron affinity and irradiated with circularly polarized light of a wavelength shorter than approximately 680 nm emits electrons whose spins are mainly oriented antiparallel to the photon spins. At 650 nm a degree of electron spin polarization around 40% is observed. The spectrum of spin polarization of the photoelectrons is similar to that known from GaAs cathodes but is shifted to shorter wavelengths. 25 μA current of spin-polarized electrons were achieved with a 5 mW He-Ne laser.

Spin Polarization of Electrons by Resonance Scattering from Mercury

Hg- compound ion states formed by electron impact with neutral mercury atoms at collision energies of 4.55, 4.71, 4.94, and 5.51 eV show up in the 2S1/2, 2D3/2, 2D5/2, and 2D5/2 scattering states in order of increasing energy. This identification is supported by the observed energy dependence of (i) elastic (e-, Hg) differential cross section, of (ii) 63P0 excitation of mercury by electron impact, and of (iii) spin polarization of electrons scattered elastically from mercury.

First measurement of the polarisation transfer on the proton in the reactions $$H(\vec e,e'\vec p)$$ and $$D(\vec e,e'\vec p)$$

The measurement of the polarisation transfer to the proton in the reactions\(H(\vec e,e'\vec p)\) and\(D(\vec e,e'\vec p)\) performed with longitudinally polarised electrons in quasi-free kinematics is presented. The coincidence measurement was executed atQ2≈8fm−2 using the 855 MeV, c.w. beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The recoil polarisation was determined by means of a carbon analyser. The experiment shows that the binding of the nucleon does not modify the polarisationPx of the recoil proton within an error ofΔPx/Px≈10%. Intermediate resonance excitation in the γp→pπ0π0 reaction

The helicity dependence of the total cross section for the (gamma) over right arrow(p) over right arrow -> p pi(0)pi(0) reaction has been measured for the first time at incident photon energies from 400 to 800 MeV. The measurement, performed at the tagged photon beam facility of the MAMI accelerator in Mainz, used the large acceptance detector DAPHNE and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. This channel is found to be excited predominantly when the photon and proton have a parallel spin orientation, most likely due to the intermediate production of the D-13(1520) resonance. The angular distribution of electrons scattered elastically by gold atoms has been investigated over the angular range from 30 to 155° and with electron energies between 150 and 1900 eV. The scattering curves obtained resemble closely the corresponding curves for mercury atoms. The theoretically expected energy dependence of the 90°-scattering is in poor agreement only with the results obtained experimentally in this work.

Summary Report of the Workshop on Polarized Electron Sources and Electron Spin Polarimeters

The workshop was a satellite meeting of the 9th International Symposium on High Energy Spin Physics, Bonn 1990. It was the third in a row of similar workshops organised by Ch.K. Sinclair in Stanford 1983 [1] and in Minneapolis 1988 [2]. About fourty scientists from atomic, solid state, as well as high energy particle physics participated in the meeting. The broad spectrum of different fields of physics represented resulted in lively discussions throughout the workshop. It is hoped that the tradition of bringing together physicists working with polarized electrons in so different research fields, started by Ch.K. Sinclair in the Stanford meeting 1983, will find its contivation in the satelli…

Source of Polarized Electrons for MAMI B

A source of polarized electrons has been set up in order to inject polarized electrons into the 855 MeV c.w. electron accelerator MAMI B at the Mainz nuclear physics institute. It is based on photoemission of the 3/5 semiconductor GaAsP and will provide a d.c. current of 100 µA with a beam emittance of 1π mm mrad, and a polarization of about 40%.

Electron resonance scattering from mercury

The differential cross section and the spin polarisation of electrons scattered elastically from mercury have been measured as a function of collision energy in the range 4.0 to 6.0 eV for several selected scattering angles. The observed data can be understood if one assumes that resonances are formed at 4.55 eV in the 2S1/2, at 4.71 eV in the 2D3/2 and at 4.94 eV and 5.51 eV respectively in the 2D5/2 scattering state.

2.45 GHz synchronised polarised electron injection at MAMI

Abstract A semiconductor modelocked diode laser has been used to produce picosecond spin-polarised electron bunches from strained GaAsP photocathodes and inject them into MAMI, synchronised to the 2.45 GHz accelerating field. The laser meets the operational requirements of MAMI producing stable electron beams, with a polarisation purity of 72% and a transmission efficiency of 52% at an accelerated beam current of 10.1 μA.

Electron spin polarization in the photoemission of NEA GaAs1?x P x

Negative electron affinity GaAs1−xPx-photocathodes emit spin-polarized electrons if irradiated with circularly polarized light. The spectra of spin polarization of photoelectrons emitted from crystals with different phosphorus contentx resemble each other in shape but shift to shorter wavelengths with increasingx. Polarization values up to 40% are observed for electrons from crystals withx=0 andx=0.38. Cathodes with higher phosphorus contents increasing fromx=0.65 tox=0.87 and tox = 1.0 deliver photoelectrons with decreasing degrees of spin polarization of 17%, 15%, and 9%, respectively, at maximum.

Determination of the neutron electric form factor in the D(e,e′n)p reaction and the influence of nuclear binding

The electric form factor of the neutron GE,n has been determined at the Mainz Microtron MAMI at the low momentum transfer Q2= 0.15 (GeV/c)2 in a measurement of the recoil polarisation ratio Px/Pz in the quasifree reaction D(e,e′n)p. At this Q2 the influence of the nuclear binding is strong. A purely kinematical model is used to get some insight into the effect of the initial Fermi momentum distribution of the neutron. The influence of the final state interaction is determined quantitatively by a model of Arenhovel et al.. After the corresponding corrections a value of GE,n(0.15 (GeV/c)2) = 0.0481±0.0065stat±0.0053syst is obtained.

The Electric Formfactor of the Neutron Determined by Quasielastic Scattering of Longitudinally Polarized Electrons from 3He and 2D

The recent availability of polarized electron beams at electron accelerator laboratories adds another technique to probing the electromagnetic structure of nuclear matter [1]. The present paper discusses the application of polarized electron scattering to the determination of the electric formfactor of the neutron. Its value at medium energies is only poorly known hitherto. Electron scattering is dominated by interaction with the neutron magnetic moment. A spin rotator for producing a longitudinally polarized electron beam with MAMI

Abstract The design and performance characteristics of a full 4 π-space spin rotator for 100 keV electrons are described. The spin rotator was developed as part of the acceleration scheme for polarized electrons in the MAINZ race track microtron cascade MAMI [1]. It allows to orientate the polarization vector in any direction before injection. Thus it is possible to optimize the longitudinal polarization component, required for experiments with polarized high energy electrons, at target position. With this scheme various experimental halls can be supplied with longitudinally polarized electrons in the full energy range of MAMI between 180 and 855 MeV.

First measurement of the helicity-dependent γ p↦pη differential cross-section

The helicity dependence of the (γ) over right arrow(p) over right arrow -+ peta reaction has been measured for the first time at a center-of-mass angle theta(eta)*= 70degrees in the photon energy range from 780 MeV to 790 MeV. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4pi-detector system, a circularly polarized, tagged photon beam. and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. The helicity 3/2 cross-section is found to be small and the results for helicity 1/2 agree with predictions from the MAID analysis.

Polarization transfer in then 2 P-excitation of alkali atoms by longitudinally polarized electrons

In (ns — np)-excitation of alkali atoms by polarized electrons some of the spin orientation of the primary electron beam is transfered to the excited atoms because of exchange collisions. In the present work the polarization transfer to Na, K, Rb, and Cs respectively is studied by looking for the circular light polarization of (np — ns)-decay radiation emitted in forward direction following impact excitation by a beam of longitudinally polarized electrons. Measurement of the Parity Violation in Quasi-Elastic Electroweak Electron-Scattering from 9Be

In the energy range of about 300 MeV, available at the Mainz- Linac, quasi-elastic scattering dominates the total cross section at backward scattering angles. This process can therefore be detected efficiently by a gas Cerenkov-counter with large solid angle. This is a prerequisit for experiments on parity violation due to the very small asymmetry effect being of the order of 1|10-5 at these energies [1]. The counting system built, consists of 12 elliptical mirrors, imaging the Cerenkov photons seen in target direction onto photomultipliers. First measurement of the electric formfactor of the neutron in the exclusive quasielastic scattering of polarized electrons from polarized 3He

Abstract A first measurement of the asymmetry in quasielastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from a polarized 3 He gas target in coincidence with the knocked out neutron is reported. This measurement was made feasible by the cw beam of the 855 MeV Mainz Microtron MAMI. It allows a determination of the electric formfactor of the neutron G E n independent of binding effects to first order. At Q 2 =0.31 ( GeV /c) 2 two asymmetries A ∥ ( S He ∥ q ) and A ⊥ ( S He ⊥ q ) have been measured giving A ∥ =(−7.40±0.73)% and A ⊥ =(0.89±0.30)% . The ratio A ⊥ / A ∥ is independent of the absolute value of the electron and target polarization and yields G E n =0.035±0.012±0.005.

Polarization in mott scattering of multi-MeV electrons from heavy nuclei

To aid fundamental studies on the polarization of electrons in beta decay, measurements were made of the spin dependence in the scattering of 14 MeV electrons from Pb as a function of scattering angle and foil thickness. The experiment made use of a beam of polarized electrons from a strained GaAsP cathode. A simple theoretical model based on plural scattering explains the observed dependence of the analyzing power on foil thickness. The results extrapolated to infinitely thin targets are in excellent agreement with theory if the finite nuclear size is taken into account.

The electric form factor of the neutron GEn has been determined in double polarized exclusive 3He(e,e'n) scattering in quasi–elastic kinematics by measuring asymmetries A⊥, A∥ of the cross section with respect to helicity reversal of the electron, with the nuclear spin being oriented perpendicular to the momentum transfer q in case of A⊥ and parallel in case of A∥. A Møller polarimeter for CW and pulsed intermediate energy electron beams

The Moller polarimeter was mainly designed for the cw electron beam of the Mainz microtron (MAMI). The described polarimeter covers an energy range between 25 and 185 MeV and can relatively simply be upgraded to the maximum MAMI energy of 840 MeV. The Moller-scattered electrons are momentum-analyzed in the defocusing plane of a quadrupole magnet and both Moller electrons can be detected in coincidence for symmetrical scattering with ⊖cm=90°. All polarization components of the electron beam can be measured by suitable choices of the orientation of the target polarization. Helicity Dependence ofγp→Nπbelow 450 MeV and Contribution to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Sum Rule

The helicity dependence of the single pion photoproduction on the proton has been measured in the energy range from 200 to 450 MeV for the first time. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4pi-detector system, a circularly polarized, tagged photon beam, and a frozen-spin target. The data obtained provide new information for multipole analyses of pion photoproduction and determine the main contributions to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule and the forward spin polarizability gamma(0).

Impact excitation of 42 P-potassium by polarized electrons

The present work investigates the 42 P impact excitation of potassium by longitudinally polarized electrons. Exchange scattering causes a polarization transfer from the primary electron beam to the ensemble of excited atoms which results in a non zero circular polarization of the fluorescence light emitted in foreward direction. The experimental values of light polarization agree well with values calculated using close coupling data of Moores.
