On the fermentative behavior of auxotrophic strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Background: The selection of new yeast strains could lead to improvements in bioethanol production. Here, we have studied the fermentative capacity of different auxotrophic mutants of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which are routinely used as hosts for the production of heterologous proteins. It has recently been found that these strains exhibit physiological alterations and peculiar sensitivities with respect to the parental prototrophic strains from which they derive. A novel process-based model of microbial growth: self-inhibition in Saccharomyces cerevisiae aerobic fed-batch cultures

Microbial population dynamics in bioreactors depend on both nutrients availability and changes in the growth environment. Research is still ongoing on the optimization of bioreactor yields focusing on the increase of the maximum achievable cell density. A new process-based model is proposed to describe the aerobic growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cultured on glucose as carbon and energy source. The model considers the main metabolic routes of glucose assimilation (fermentation to ethanol and respiration) and the occurrence of inhibition due to the accumulation of both ethanol and other self-produced toxic compounds in the medium. Bread making with Saccharomyces cerevisiae CEN.PK113-5D expressing lipase A from Bacillus subtilis: Leavening characterisation and aroma enhancement

Summary Lipase A from Bacillus subtilis was expressed in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae CEN.PK113-5D strain as a cell wall-immobilised enzyme. The recombinant yeast was used in bread making to test the effect of lipase A on the bread properties such as rheological and aromatic properties. The results were compared to the not transformed strain and the commercial baker's yeast. The recombinant strain resulted a good leavening agent comparable to the commercial baker's yeasts provided 1% sucrose was added to the dough. Experimental comparison between direct and indirect measurement techniques for the characterization of Linear Induction Motors

Abstract An experimental comparison between direct and indirect measurement techniques for the on-line characterization of Linear Induction Motors (LIMs) is presented. Indirect measurements are based on a mathematical model of the motors. Direct measurements are carried out by means of traditional instruments and a smart sensor, located on the LIM and linked to the controller by the power supply line. Both a synthetic description of the LIM model and the sensor architecture are reported. The experimental results, achieved by applying different feeding strategy, are discussed.

Compensation of Nonlinearity of Voltage and Current Instrument Transformers

This paper aims at characterizing and improving the metrological performances of current and voltage instrument transformers (CTs and VTs) in harmonic measurements in the power system. A theoretical analysis is carried out to demonstrate that, due to the iron core nonlinearity, CT and VT output signal is distorted even when the input signal is a pure sine wave. Starting from this analysis, a new method for CT and VT characterization and compensation is proposed.
