Effects of the 6th September 2002 earthquake: damage amplification in the south-eastern sector of Palermo explained by GIS technology
During the 6th September 2002 earthquake the highest damage level in Palermo was observed in the SE sector. This is a recent urbanization area where reinforced concrete structures predominate. A detailed analysis of soil properties in Palermo was carried out by City-GIS to investigate a possible role of nearsurface geology on earthquake effects. City-GIS is a tool dedicated to natural hazard evaluation in urban areas. The availability of high density of well log data (stratigraphic and geotechnical) allowed a realistic modeling of surface geology and physical-mechanical properties that control the seismic response. In wide zones of the above mentioned sector of…
Spatial Extent of vertical tectonic motions in northern Sicily using Holocene and Last Interglacial sea level markers: a case study between Acquedolci e Capo d'Orlando.
Vertical position of sea-level, related deposits and morphologies (e.g., last interglacial, LIG, 125ka,) provide useful markers to utilize with this purpose (LAMBECK et alii, 2004; FERRANTI et alii, 2006, ANTONIOLI et alii, 2009). Using published (ANTONIOLI et alii, 2006) and new data we provide a review of the northern coast of Sicily uplift rates. The markers used in this study are: terraces inner margin, tidal notches, etc., and, for the last millennia archaeological markers and fossil beaches and vermetid reef. Data on vertical movements calculated for the coastal area developing in the north-Sicilian continental margin indicate that, from East to West, a strong variation of vertical ra…
Characterization of component pigments in a mixture
This work is part of Raman spectra database constitution of pigments and materials of Cultural Heritage interest for polychrome artworks characterization. The colours of paintings are often obtained mixing pigments of palette artist’s. The attribution of a work of art to an author and the individuation of fakes are related to the identification of used pigments and also to the detection of mixture constituents. The main research objective is the extension of PH3DRA laboratory database with information useful to detect not only each single pigment but also quantitative data regarding its relative ratio in the examined mixture. The availability of spectra as revealed represents the primary li…
Historical building dating: refinement of established sample preparation protocol
Abstract: The application of thermal (TL) and optical (OSL) stimulated luminescence on pottery and building materials has allowed to resolve numer-ous problems in both the fields of retrospective do-simetry and dating. Routine measurements request the registration of TL signals obtained on polymineral fine-grained frac-tion (FG) extracted from pottery sherds and bricks used as building material with the Added Dose (AD) technique. One of the reasons of the dispersion of the lumi-nescence measurements when using this fraction is the variability of relative contents of quartz and feld-spars, which due to their differing behaviour influ-encing the equivalent dose (ED) and therefore its uncertai…
