NEW RECORDS OF SPRINGTAILS (COLLEMBOLA) FROM SICILY, ITALY
Along with some studies on soil fauna in various Sicilian sites, both agricultural lands and typical Mediterranean habitats, particular attention was paid to the Collembolan. Specific identification allowed to assess the occurrence in Sicily of 39 species not previously recorded, belonging to 10 families: Hypogastruridae (six species), Brachystomellidae (one species), Neanuridae (five species), Onychiuridae (three species), Tullbergiidae (seven species), Isotomidae (nine species), Entomobryidae (three species), Cyphoderidae (one species), Dicyrtomidae (one species), and Katiannidae (one species). Of these 39 species, 21 are new also for Italy. Furthermore, this is the first record of the ge…
First record of Halyomorpha halys (Stål, 1855) (Hemiptera Pentatomidae) in Sicily. Naturalista Siciliano, 61(2): 139-145
The occurrence of the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål, 1855), in Sicily is here recorded for the first time. The species, native of Eastern Asia, has been introduced in North America and Europe, and found in northern Italy in 2012. In Sicily, the insect was detected in two different part of Palermo town, in the neighborhood of the maritime port and near the Botanical Garden. Detection of H. halys in Sicily was expected, due to the high spread rate shown in the different areas in which it was introduced.
Bird abundance and richness in ten Mediterranean agroforestry systems
Since the last century agriculture is strongly promoting the simplification of the landscape. The LIFE Desert Adapt project is been developed across 1000 hectares in Italy, Spain, Portu-gal and has the objective of implementing integrative agroforestry-based land use planning and management, and one of the indicators to evaluate the project effectiveness is birds richness and abundance. Here we present the results of the first assessment and explore the relationships with the main vegetation cover types. We established 68 sampling points where we recorded bird abundance and richness. In total we registered 57 bird species, sampling points surrounded by woodlands presented 50 species, while …
Life Desert Adapt, la sfida ambiziosa contro la desertificazione ambientale.
Nel progetto la costruzione di modelli di sviluppo aziendale che adottano tecniche e misure di adattamento capaci di preparare le aree più a rischio.
An exceptional outbreak of Macroscytus brunneus (Fabricius, 1803) (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Cydnidae) on Linosa island (Pelagian Islands, Sicily)
An exceptional outbreak of the burrowing bug Macroscytus brunneus occurred in summer 2017 on Linosa island (Pelagian Islands, Sicily). Huge numbers of specimens, attracted to the lights of the small village, interfered heavily with human activities for almost three months. The few precedent cases reported in literature are reviewed.
Olive seed wasps (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea), potentially important pests of olive crops in the Western Cape of South Africa
Most phytophagous insects on cultivated olives, Olea europaea L. subsp. europaea var. europaea, in South Africa are native and come from the local wild olive tree, Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata. This paper presents the first qualitative and comparative data regarding the phytophagous seed wasps on cultivated and wild olives. From 2009 to 2012, 62 random fruit samples were collected from untreated cultivated olive trees and 53 random fruit samples from wild olives at 13 different localities in the Western Cape. During spring 2013 and summer 2014, olives collected from the trees were dissected with a scalpel (when the pit was still soft) in search of seed wasp eggs and young larvae or cut wi…
