Multimedia applications in industrial networks: integration of image processing in profibus
This paper analyzes the transmission of images through Profibus for applications concerned with the processing of images integrated in control systems, by means of a detailed study of two real cases with different bandwidth requirements. We analyze the special features of an artificial vision system making use of Profibus as a transport system, the scheduling of the traffic in order to guarantee the delivery of the images and the control traffic before their deadlines, the protocol used, and the compression techniques usable in this kind of system, which enable us to reduce the necessary bandwidth for the applications without degrading the operation of the image processing application. Industrial video sequences for network performance evaluation
The analysis of video traffic characteristics plays a fundamental role in the evaluation of network performance or schedule design. However, the majority of these analyses are based on the study of traffic characteristics generated with different codifiers on typical general purpose films or sequences. These are generally made using asymmetric codifiers which are not usable in live real-time multimedia transmission systems. Dynamic QoS management for multimedia real-time transmission in industrial environments
The use of multimedia within industrial applications has become commonplace, targetting improved process monitoring and machine vision. In both cases, the multimedia information is commonly distributed and subject to time constraints that must be met across networks while avoiding untolerable interference over typical control flows. This can be achieved with Constant Bit-Rate (CBR) channels, typically supported by real-time protocols. However, the compressors used to reduce the amount of information to transfer generate Variable Bit-Rate (VBR) patterns.
