The panel painting represinting Madonna con bambino e San Giovanni of Museo Diocesano of Palermo: Scientific studies for the restoration

The present research focuses on a painting on wood representing the Madonna con Bambino e San Giovanni, attributed to an unknown artist belonging to the Cretan-Venetian school, dated to the end of 16th century. The aim of the study is to provide a complete knowledge of the characteristics of the artefact in order to plane and perform a procedure according to conservative restoration. Historical and artistic evaluations and technical investigations were carried out for identifying the context, the constitutive materials and the executive techniques. The study was supported by the application of non-invasive (multispectral investigations and X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy) and analytical tec…

MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDY FOR THE DATING AND THE RESTORATION OF THE SAN VITO WOODEN PULPIT OF MUSEO DIOCESANO OF PALERMO

The aim of the present research is to investigate the execution techniques of San Vito wooden pulpit in the Museo Diocesano of Palermo and to provide helpful information to dating it in addition to technical, historical and artistic evaluations. In particular, this paper describes the application of analytical techniques (imaging diagnostics techniques, Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with X-ray Energy Dispersive spectroscopy Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) to better understand the pulpit characteristics, both support and decoration, useful to plan and perform the correct restoration.

MICROSCOPIC TECHNIQUES AND A MULTI-ANALYTICAL APPROACH TO CHARACTERIZE THE MATERIALS OF TWO RUSSIAN ICONS

Two 19th century Russian icons, from the Museo Diocesano of Palermo, were analysed by UV photography, X-ray fluorescence, energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF), optical microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy, combined with energy dispersive x-ray analysis, (SEM/EDS). The multi-analytical study of the icons “Protezione della Madre di Dio” (Pokrov’s Icon, Protection of Holy Mother of God) and ‘’Madre di Dio Gioia di Tutti gli Afflitti’’, (Holy Mother of God, Joy of all the afflicted), have been performed to reveal materials and technological features of the original painting of the 19th century as well as the materials used during past restoration works.…

A genetic study on subtropical Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan var. cebil (Griseb.) Altschul tree from Northwestern Argentina

Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan var. cebil (Griseb.) Altschul is a tree species in South America important for its cultural, economic, and medicinal uses. In addition, it represents a trace in memory of the forests that have decreased over the years and for this reason it is not only interesting to study but also important to preserve the tree species for future generations. In this paper, we have characterized the genetic diversity of four populations. We collected seeds from four different sites: San Bernardo (B), El Cebilar (C), Metán (M), and El Gallinato (G) in Salta Province, North Argentina. We then compared the intergenic transcribed sequences of ribosomal DNA, a known geneti…

The chemical composition of the flowers essential oil of Inula crithmoides (Asteraceae) growing in aeolian islands, Sicily (Italy) and its biocide properties on microorganisms affecting historical art crafts

Essential oils have been used for a long time in several fields of interest. Recently, they have also been applied in the conservation of Cultural Heritage to contrast biodeterioration replacing the most current biocides toxic for humans and environment. Inula crithmoides L. (syn. Limbarda crithmoides (L.) Dumort) is a halophyte species distributed along the Mediterranean coasts and it is used as an edible vegetable since the young leaves or shoots are eaten raw or cooked. Several biological properties have been determined for this plant including antimicrobial activities. In this study the volatile composition of the aerial part of an accession from the Aeolian Islands, Sicily (Italy) is d…

MODERN TECHNOLOGIES FOR CONSERVATION OF VILLA ZITO PAINTINGS COLLECTION (PALERMO – SICILY)

In this study we describe the conservative integrated approach performed on 40 paintings, dating from different period (XVII- XX century), belonging to “Fondazione Sicilia “ and exposed in Villa Zito paint gallery in Palermo (Mazzocca 2015). Through a multidisciplinary approach both constitutive materials and state of conservation have been determined. Particularly, pigments and executive techniques were identified by non-invasive diagnostic investigation (XRF analysis, UV fluorescence acquisition, and IR Reflectography) as well as previous restorations events. The study has included the revealing of microbial colonization by using non-invasive sampling methods (Nylon membrane fragment) and…
