The present study investigates the social effects of migration by looking at Peruvian migrants’ survival strategies in a transnational perspective. Drawing on theories of social remittances and of social capital, the research proposes a notion of substantial social citizenship which is constructed by migrants from below, through transnational family- or community-based welfare arrangements, and which reacts to the shortcomings of formal national citizenship regimes.
