Nuclear Shape Transitions and Some Properties of Aligned-Particle Configurations at High Spin

Two topics are addressed in this paper. First, we discuss the variation of shapes with spin and neutron number for nuclei in the N approx. = 88 transitional region. Second, we present comments on the feeding times of very high spin single-particle yrast states.

Beta-delayed particle emission of 36K

Abstract 36 Ar targets of 19 μg cm 2 thickness were made by a sandwich technique in which a 70 nm layer of Al was evaporated onto the implanted Al surface between five successive implantations of 36 Ar ions. The sources of 36 K were prepared by depositing the recoil atoms from the 36 Ar(p, n) 36 K reaction by means of a helium jet onto a fast transport tape. The measured delayed particle spectra revealed 11 proton groups (0.5 MeV E p E α 36 K. Total proton and α-particle branching ratios were measured to be 4.8 × 10 −4 and 3 × 10 −5 , respectively. Partial level widths and reduced proton and α-particle transition widths were determined for several individual levels with the aid of additiona…

Decay of 14.6 h90Nb

The disintegration of 14.6 h90Nb produced by bombarding natural Zr with 13 MeV protons was investigated by methods of γ-ray spectrometry. Results from singles, coincidence and anti-Compton spectrometer measurements are reported. A decay scheme is proposed including excited states in90Zr at 1761, 2186.4, 2319.1, 2739.4, 2747.9, 3077.0, 3448.2, 3589.5, 3977.1, 4232.4, 4319.5, 4375.4, 4541.6, 5060.0, 5164.6 and 5432.9 keV. Over 10 γ-ray transitions and several levels proposed in an earlier investigation are shown to be in error.

Decay of24Al and24Almto γ-Ray and α-Particle Emitting States in24Mg

The level structure of 24Mg and decay properties of 129 ms 24Alm and 2.07 s 24Al have been investigated by means of γ-ray and particle spectroscopy. The energy and intensity of the isomeric transition were measured to be 425.8 ± 0.1 keV and (82.5 ± 3.0)%, respectively. The isomer was observed to decay via a super-allowed transition with a log ft value of 3.51 ± 0.04 to its 1+, 9965.2 ± 1.5 keV analog state in 24Mg. In addition, decay to seven particle-emitting levels and four levels depopulated by γ-ray emission were observed. In the decay of 2.07 s 24Al a new delayed α-particle group with an energy 3.04 MeV and three new γ-transitions were observed. More accurate values than those reported…

Non-yrast level structure of135Pr

Levels of135Pr populated in the (p,2n) reaction were studied using methods of in-beamγ-ray and conversion electron spectroscopy. Many low-lying positive-parity states give evidence of a deformation ofβ=0.15–0.20. The same conclusion is evident from band structures built on these positive-parity states and on theh11/2 negative-parity state. The triaxial rotor-plus-particle model reproduces quite well band structures withβ=0.20 andγ= 21°.

Efficiency of an on-line isotope separator system employing cooled and NaCl-loaded He-jet methods

Abstract A pure helium-jet at liquid nitrogen temperature coupled to a Nielsen type ion source, and a NaCl-loaded helium-jet coupled to a hollow-cathode ion source have been investigated as means to connect a cyclotron target chamber on-line to a mass separator. Technical details and performances of some critical parts of the system are described. Total separation efficiencies measured under various experimental conditions for several nuclides vary between 0.01 and 1.0%.

Properties of isomeric states and the ?d 3/2-vi 13/2 multiplet in194Au

The level structure of194Au has been studied by observing prompt and delayedγ-rays following194Pt(p,n) and195Pt(p,2n) reactions. The conversion electron andγ-ray spectra from the decay of the 0.42s (10−) and 0.60s (5+) isomers at 476 keV and 107.4 keV, respectively, have been measured using the He-jet method. The half-lives of the 6+ (278.2 keV, 1.1±0.4 ns), 7+ (224.6 keV, 2.6±0.2 ns) and 8+ (406.8 keV, 2.9±0.4 ns) members of theπd3/2-vi13/2 multiplet have been obtained from the time distributions between cyclotron beam pulses andγ-rays depopulating these levels. A calculation made assuming a pure two-particle configuration for the multiplet predicts very well theB(E2) values for the transi…

Beta decay of 40Sc to proton and alpha-particle unbound states in 40Ca

Delayed charged particle emission associated with the precursor nuclide 40Sc was studied by use of the He-jet technique. Altogether 40 proton groups (1.0 MeV < Ep < 3.7 MeV) and 21 α-particle groups (2.0 MeV < Eα < 4.6 MeV) were observed. Total proton and α-particle branching ratios were measured to be (4.4±0.7) × 10−3 and (0.17±0.05) × 10−3, respectively. Association of the delayed particle emitting levels with the levels observed in resonance reaction studies is discussed. The fact that the most prominent α-particle groups do not have a counterpart in resonance reaction data suggests collectivity or a cluster configuration for the emitting levels. Log ft values (upper limits) for β+ trans…

In-beam study of low-lying levels in the149Sm nucleus

The146Nd(α,n) reaction combined with conventional in-beam spectroscopic methods has been used to study low-lying levels in149Sm. Several new levels andγ-ray transitions have been placed to the149Sm level scheme. Main features of levels below 1 MeV in149Sm have been reproduced in a quasiparticle-rotor model calculation.

Medium-spin levels in the N=83 nucleus147Gd

Levels of theN=83 nucleus147Gd have been investigated by methods of in-beamγ-ray and conversion electron spectroscopy using the147Sm(3He, 3n) and144Sm(α, n) reactions. Sixteen new low- and medium-spin levels have been observed in147Gd. We have located six members of thevf7/2×3− particle-octupole septuplet and several neutron single-particle states in147Gd. The levels of147Gd are discussed on the basis of the spherical shell model.
