Šā pētījuma iniciatīva izriet no LU Ekspertu Padomes1 2017. gada 20. septembra apaļā galda diskusijas “Kritiskā domāšana — kā to mācīt, veicināt un sasaistīt ar mediju lietotprasmi Latvijā?”. Krājumu veido LU Filozofijas un socioloģijas institūta pētnieku Latvijas Universitātes 76. starptautiskās zinātniskās konferences sekciju darbā 2018. gada 15. un 16. februārī nolasīto prioritārajam projektam “Kritiskā domāšana, inovācija, konkurētspēja un globalizācija” veltīto referātu tēzes, kā arī vairāki raksti, kuri tapuši uz šajā konferencē nolasīto referātu pamata. LU FSI pētniekiem konference bija ne tikai atskaite par otrajā pētniecības gadā projektā paveikto, bet tajā pētnieki diskutēja arī par to, kā paplašināt pētāmo tēmu loku, pievēršoties vairākiem Latvijas sabiedrībai aktuāliem jautājumiem. Kritiskās domāšanas pamats ir domāšana, par kuru prāta (mind) filosofijā un epistemoloģijā ir daudz un dažādu viedokļu. Lai sekmētu kritisko domāšanu, ir jāseko labā/ļaunā, skaistā/neglītā, patiesā/melīgā, zināšanu/neziņas un citu ētisku un estētisku norišu situācijai sabiedrībā, jāanalizē un jāveicina pozitīvi ievirzītas prakses, nenoliedzot to, ka pozitīvās tendences ir iespējams atšķirt no negatīvajām (cinisms, nihilisms, relatīvisms, skepticisms, šovinisms u.c.), kas pavada ideoloģiski un negatīvi emocionāli ievirzītu kriticismu.

Pēdējos gados Eiropas Savienībā, arī Latvijā, arvien aktuālāka kļūst nepatiesas informācijas un viltus ziņu straujā izplatība, kuras rezultātā notiek cilvēku dezinformācija, manipulēšana ar prātiem un noskaņojumiem. Viens no šīs problēmas cēloņiem ir vērtību relatīvisms un nenoteiktība, kritiskās domāšanas mazspēja, kā arī pārlieku nepārdomāta paļaušanās uz kritiskās domāšanas stimulēšanu kā panaceju sabiedrības neizpratnes un maldināšanas novēršanai.Pētījuma mērķis ir veikt izpēti par kritiskās domāšanas veicināšanas efektivitāti Latvijā izglītības, mediju un informācijpratības aspektos, kā arī izstrādāt ieteikumus Latvijas politikas veidotājiem.
