Possible relationship between micronucleated and binucleated cells induced by cisplatin in cultured CHO cells
Abstract Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells were treated with a single dose (10 μg/ml) of cis-diammino-dichloroplatinum (II) (cisplatin) for 1 h and the effect of the drug on the kinetics of proliferation of the cultures was studied. It was found that the drug produces a delay in the proliferation rates of the treated cultures. The induction of micronuclei and binucleated cells (BC) at different times after treatment have also been studied, and the ability of these cells to undergo DNA synthesis (measured as the ability to incorporate [3H]thymidine) is shown. It was found that cisplatin induced a particular type of BC that contains one or more micronuclei rather than a pure population of BC.…
Intelligent system for material quality control using impact-echo testing
This paper introduces an intelligent system to discern the quality of materials inspected by the impact-echo technique. The system includes a hardware setup to inspect parallelepiped-shape materials and a procedure to classify the material depending on its quality condition. Four levels of classification with different grades of knowledge about the material defects are approached: material condition, kind of defect, defect orientation, and defect dimension. The number of classes (material qualities) in the lowest classification level is 12. The procedure is applied on signals coming from 3D finite element simulations and lab experiments with aluminium specimens. The classification procedure…
Analysis of the influence of parasympathetic postganglionic neurons on cardiac response in Ventricular Fibrillation
Physical training modifies the sympathetic-vagal balance of autonomic nervous system. Previous studies have shown that such training also produces intrinsic modifications of cardiac electrophysiological properties in isolated heart during Ventricular Fibrillation (VF). Ten NZW trained rabbits were studied to test if the modifications are related to the activity of postganglionic parasympathetic neurons. Two records per subject were acquired during VF: before (G1) and after (G2) the infusion of atropine to inhibit the activity of neurons. Mapping records were obtained using a 240-channel electrode array located in the left ventricle of isolated heart (perfused by Langendorff system). VF was …
