Late Quaternary marine ostracods of the Basque Basin (S Bay of Biscay): taxonomy and distribution
Late Quaternary taxonomy and ecologic and age distributions of ostracods from the Basque Basin (S Bay of Biscay) are described. More than forty-four thousands ostracod specimens have been obtained from one hundred surface samples and core samples from six cores located in shelf and upper bathyal depths and other infrabathyal core as comparative deep reference. A total of 155 species have been taxonomically described, belonging to 67 genera. Most characteristic species (123) have been SEM figured, and ecologic-geographic distributions and ages have been provided for all species. The resulting database will be a useful help for palaeoceanographic and palaeoclimatologic studies of the region.
Factors affecting the distribution of recent lacustrine ostracoda from the Caicedo de Yuso-Arreo Lake (Western Ebro Basin, Spain)
Recent Ostracoda assemblages of the Caicedo de Yuso Lake have been described as representative of palustrine/lacustrine environments in Iberian temperate lakes. This study considers the changes in assemblages at a fixed station during two consecutive annual cycles, as well as their distribution in summer and winter profiles of the lake. Total sample-assemblages have been quantified as species diversities, measured by the Shannon-Wiener index H (S). The trends of this index are compared to physical parameters (temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, CO2) of the bottom waters of this lake. Variation in Sr uptake in the shell of the freshwater gastropod Bithynia tentaculata from Lake Arreo (northern Spain) and culture experiments
The Sr uptake features in Bithynia tentaculata aragonite shells from monthly collections in Lake Arreo (northern Spain) over a two-year period are compared with those from the same species grown in culture experiments with similar waters under controlled temperature. The shell aragonite of B. tentaculata from Lake Arreo formed in isotopic equilibrium with the lake water. A comparison of the stable oxygen isotope values (δ18O) from the shells and waters allowed the selection of suitable shells for Sr uptake studies. Paleoenvironmental evolution of the Pliocene Villarroya Lake, northern Spain. A multidisciplinary approach
The Pliocene Villarroya basin fill consists of lacustrine and alluvial deposits over 100 m thick. The lacustrine deposits, up to 30 m thick, comprise three sequences. The two lower sequences consist of profundal, laminated deposits formed by mostly terrigenous facies that are overlain by charophytic carbonates and varves. The uppermost, third sequence made up of massive bioturbated mudstones corresponds to a very shallow lacustrine-palustrine environment. Bulk mineralogy comprises carbonates, clay minerals, quartz and feldspars. The carbonates are: exogenic, biogenic calcite and biogenic aragonite.
