Abstract Rationale: Primary hyperparathyroidism, usually as a result of a hyperfunctioning parathyroid gland, represents more than 90% cases of patients evaluated for hypercalcemia. Combined techniques of preoperative scintigraphy and SPECT/CT serve as a successful minimally-invasive parathyroidectomy. This recent imaging method provides four-dimensional functional images with advanced contrast resolution which greatly facilitates preoperative localization of parathyroid adenomas. ORBITAL PSEUDOTUMOR CAN MIMIC GRAVES’ OPHTHALMOPATHY
CONTEXT: Orbital pseudotumor (OP) is a benign inflammatory process of the orbit with a large polymorphous lymphoid infiltrate, associated with fibrosis in variable amounts, localized or diffuse. Graves’ ophthalmopathy (GO) is the most common cause of proptosis, unilateral or bilateral. CASE REPORT: We report a patient with unilateral proptosis who was initially treated with antithyroid drugs for an euthyroid Graves disease, but the extension of the investigation infirmed this. The MRI findings (inflammation of fat, muscle and the left lacrimal gland) in conjunction with the biopsy infirmed the initial diagnostic and confirmed the OP. ASSOCIATION BETWEEN LOW BONE MINERAL DENSITY, METABOLIC SYNDROME AND SEX STEROIDS DEFICIENCY IN MEN.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between low bone mineral density (BMD), metabolic syndrome (MS) and sex hormones deficiency in men. METHODS: We included in this retrospective study 199 men with osteoporosis or osteopenia and 167 men with normal BMD as controls, aged between 55-85 years old. Patients’ evaluation included: medical history and physical examination, X-ray of thoracic and lumbar spine, measuring BMD at hip and lumbar spine, serum glucose and lipid profile, serum levels of total testosterone (tT), free testosterone (fT) and estradiol (E2). Abstract Iodine deficiency in childhood can influence the mental and somatic growth and development of children by decreasing the thyroid hormone production. Iodine deficiency can be quantified by testing ioduria concentration. Our study has analyzed ioduria concentration of children detected with stature delay, coming from two distinct regions of Sibiu County, namely Gura Rîului, a known endemic area, and Şeica Mare, a lowland region. Approximately 60% of these children with iodine deficiency were detected in both regions, but a much lower average of ioduria was identified in the endemic area, where 23% of children presented severe iodine deficiency. Abstract Orbital pseudotumor represents a benign inflammatory disorder of the orbit, with unspecified etiology, whose clinical presentation can mimic the ocular pathology of Basedow disease, namely Graves’ ophthalmopathy, the two of them representing two of the most common orbital conditions.
