Organizational learning: Proposal of an integrative scale and research instrument

Abstract This study describes the development and validation of an instrument to measure organizational learning. Starting out from a comprehensive analysis of the main organizational learning models in the specialized literature, the organizational learning scale in this study consists of 18 items forming five dimensions: the ontological levels of learning, modes of knowledge conversion, learning sub-processes, types of learning, and feedback and feed-forward flows of learning. A survey to large Spanish companies provides data from 167 companies. Confirmatory factor analysis tests the construct measurement model and validates the scale. The results of the study indicate that the scale sati…

Knowledge creation. The ongoing search for strategic renewal

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to analyse how changes in a set of structural design variables (i.e. liaison position, networked design, innovation teams and work teams) affect the creation of new knowledge within organizations. The enablers intention, autonomy, fluctuation and creative chaos, redundancy, variety, and trust and commitment, taken from Nonaka's framework, are used as intermediate variables.Design/methodology/approach– A sample of 167 large Spanish companies was used to empirically test a general relational model.Findings– The analysis yielded two main conclusions. First, the relationship between structural variables and enablers, and, second, the relationship of enabler…

Green entrepreneurship and SME performance: the moderating effect of firm age

AbstractGreen entrepreneurship has been increasing with growing attention to environment protection by a variety of stakeholders. Green innovation, as the essence of green entrepreneurship, has attracted a broad range of scholarly attention with yet inconclusive findings regarding its effect on firm performance. According to our analyses of 1667 firms listed on SME board and GEM in China during the period from 2010 to 2019, we find interesting results regarding the type of green innovation involved and the moderating effect of firm age on the link between green innovation and SME performance. More precisely, we find green utility-model innovation positively influences firm performance for S…

Differentiation in knowledge‐creating organizations

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to focus on the analysis of the influence of organizational design variables on the creation of knowledge within the organization. The impact that enablers have on knowledge creation has been widely demonstrated and established in the relevant literature. Using this assumption as a starting‐point, the main aim of this study is to consider and explore the role of differentiation – horizontal and vertical – in knowledge creation using enablers as mediator variables.Design/methodology/approachThe paper has created a model of relations of the design variables that correspond to differentiation – horizontal job specialization, vertical job specialization and n…

A review of the main approaches to knowledge management

The purpose of this paper is to order and connect different perspectives on the creation and management of knowledge. Several proposals for the classification of the main approaches to knowledge management are considered and their connections and differences discussed. Three main groups emerge: measuring knowledge, managing knowledge (either with greater emphasis on the human factor or on information technologies) and creating knowledge. After selecting and analysing selection of the most relevant studies in this area, these concepts can be arranged into a continuum from a more descriptive perspective to a more normative one. The main contribution of this study is the compilation of literat…
