Mechanical properties of injection-molded binary blends of polyethylene with small additions of a liquid-crystalline polymer
The results of the investigation of the mechanical properties of polyethylene (PE) blends with small (<3 wt %) additions of thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymers (LCPs) are reported. PE/LCP compositions with various LCP weight contents were obtained by thermoplastic mixing in a two-stage process. Short-term and long-term mechanical behavior of various PE/LCP compositions were analyzed. Data on the influence of LCP addition on the tensile elastic modulus [or Young's modulus (E)], stress at yield (σY), stress at break (σB), strain at yield, strain at break, and deformation at long-term (1000-h) tensile creep were obtained. The experimental results of the investigation show that even small …
Thermomechanical Properties of Radiation-Modified Polyethylene/Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Copolymer/Liquid-Crystalline Copolyester Blends
Radiation-modified blends of high-density polyethylene (PE) with ethylene-propylene-diene copolymer (EPDM; 10-65 wt.%) and thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymer (LCP; 10 wt.%) were investigated. The LCP was a liquid-crystalline copolyester of 40% poly(ethylene terephthalate) with 60% 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. The constituents were blended using a circular extruder, the specimens were prepared by compression molding and irradiated by 60Co γ-radiation up to 200 kGy. Mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties in wide temperature range were investigated for the irradiated and non-irradiated specimens. The effects of irradiation on the thermomechanical behaviour of the PE matrix are discus…

Compositions with organomontmorillonite content 0, 5, 10 wt.% were prepared and tested. Data on the influence of organomontmorillonite content on the tensile stress?strain curves, elastic modulus, strength, and ultimate elongation of the nanocomposites are obtained. The concentration dependences of elastic properties of materials with differently oriented plate like nanoparticles analyses taking into account hierarchical structure features of nanocomposites is considered. Theoretical analysis results are…
Recycled Polycarbonate Based Nanocomposites
Post-consumer polycarbonate (RPC) blends with various amounts (5, 10, 30 wt. %) of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVAc) are investigated as potential nanocomposite matrices. At EVAc weight content of 10 wt.% maximum tensile strength σM and impact strength AI increase is observed in comparison to neat RPC. Addition of EVAc, however, reduces resistance to creep as well as decrease thermal stability of the investigated compositions. Addition of montmorillonite nanoclay (MMT), however, allows increase modulus of elasticity E and yield strength σY of the investigated RPC blend with 10 wt. % of EVAc. Besides it creep resistance and thermal resistance of the investigated system is increased to …
Modeling and stress-strain characteristics of the mechanical properties of carbon-nanotube-reinforced poly(vinyl acetate) nanocomposites
Polymer/carbon nanotube (CNT) composites are one of the most perspective advanced materials developed in recent years. The properties of CNT-reinforced polymer composites, however, strongly depend on structural aspects of the nanostructured filler and on its dispersion quality in a polymer matrix. Consequently, this research was devoted to the investigation of multiwalled-CNT-modified poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) composites with respect to the mechanical property dependence on some structural characteristics of CNTs. PVAc/CNT nanocomposites were obtained with a solution casting technique. The amount of CNTs was changed from 0.01 up to 2 wt %. The stress–strain characteristics of PVAc/CNT nano…
Mechanical Properties of High-Density Polyethylene/Chlorinated Polyethylene Blends
Results of experimental investigation of mechanical properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) blends in tension are reported. The specimens of pure HDPE, CPE, and nine types of HDPE/CPE blends, with different component ratios at 10 wt.% intervals, are examined. The features of the stress-strain curves obtained are discussed. Data on the influence of blend composition on the elastic modulus, yield stress, breaking stress, and ultimate elongation are obtained. The results of investigations into the creep behavior are also presented. It is found that the creep compliance obeys the power law of creep with coefficients depending on blend composition.
Starch Based Biodegradable Nanocomposites: Structure and Properties
Plasticized starch (PS)/montmorillonite clay (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by casting technique. Structural features, stress-strain characteristics and sorption properties were investigated. Upon introduction of rather small amounts of MMT, the PS parameters of the mechanical and barrier properties considerably improve. Tensile strength and elastic modulus of the materials examined decrease with increased moisture content, but the effect of reinforcement of PS with MMT nanoparticles remain intact.
Mechanical properties and water vapor permeability of starch/montmorillonite nanocomposites
Results of an investigation into an unmodified-montmorillonite (MMT)-filled nanocomposite based on plasticized starch are reported. Data on the influence of MMT content on the tensile mechanical properties of the material are presented. Particular attention is given to the water vapor permeability of the nanocomposite. It is found that the resistance to water permeation of plasticized starch can be improved considerably by introducing a rather small amount of the filler into it. Data on the influence of MMT content on the coefficients of moisture diffusion, solubility, and permeability are reported. Also, a simple method for determining the effect of irregularly oriented platelike filler pa…
Structure and Mechanical Properties of Melt Intercalated Po1lypropylene–Organomontmorillonite Nanocomposites
The preparation and properties of polymer nanocomposites, obtained by melt-compounding of polypropylene (PP) and organomontmorillonite (OMMT) modified by different alkyl ammonium salts, are described. A copolymer of maleic anhydride and PP was used as a compatibilizing additive. Nanocomposites with OMMT content of 1, 5 and 10 wt% were prepared and tested. The influence of OMMT content on the tensile stress–strain curves, elastic modulus, yield and tensile strength, and ultimate elongation of the nanocomposites is determined. The results of measuring the microhardness and impact strength of polymer nanocomposites are presented. Long-term creep tests were performed to predict the long-term de…
The effect of partial exfoliation of multilayer silicate filler particles on the elastic properties of a polymer composite
Abstract A method for stepwise calculation the elastic constants of a three-phase composite, including the polymer matrix, the fully exfoliated silicate nanolayers and the platelike silicate particles in the form of multilayer intercalated stacks is considered. A theoretical analysis is carried out by using the Mori–Tanaka theory of an equivalent medium. The influence of degree of exfoliation (the ratio of exfoliated filler content to the total filler content) on the reinforcing efficiency is studied and discussed. A comparative analysis of experimental data of elastic modulus for a rigid polyurethane/montmorillonite composite and prediction results is carried out. It is shown, that with gr…
Time–temperature correspondence prediction of stress relaxation of polymeric materials from a minimum of data
Abstract We have determined the stress relaxation of a longitudinal polymer liquid crystal (PLC), polypropylene and their blends containing 10 and 20% of the PLC at the constant strain of 0.5%. The results for nine temperature levels in the range between 20 and 100 °C were used to create master curves for T ref =20 ° C . The temperature shift factors aT were calculated using a general formula derived by one of us and based on free volume vf and the chain relaxation capability model. The predicted values agree with the experimental ones for all materials studied within limits of the experimental accuracy. Moreover, the relation between the shift factor aT and the reduced volume ṽ has been us…
Prediction of long-term service performance of polymeric materials from short-term tests: Creep and prediction of the stress shift factor of a longitudinal polymer liquid crystal
The material studied is a longitudinal polymer liquid crystal (PLC). The creep behavior of the PLC is examined in the region of nonlinear viscoelasticity. The creep compliance D curves at nine different stress (T levels, from 10 to 50 J.cm3 at a constant temperature are determined and shifted along the log time axis for uRf = 10 J . to produce the D versus t/a, master curve. A fairly general formula for stress shift factor a,, based on free volume vf and the chain relaxation capability (CRC) derived by one of the authors is applied. The formula predicts values that agree with the experimental ones within the limits of the experimental accuracy. Thus, experiments at several stress levels can…
Recycled Polycarbonate Blend as Matrix for Development of Polymer Nanocomposite
Summary: Secondary polycarbonate (SPC) is modified with various amounts (5, 10, 30 wt%) of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVAc) in order to reduce its brittleness. It is observed that at optimal EVAc weight content maximum tensile strength σM and impact strength AI increse by 14% (ωEVAc = 5 wt%) and 450% (ωEVAc = 10 wt%) in comparison to neat SPC, respectively. Addition of montmorillonite nanoclay (MMT) allowed further increase of elastic modulus E, strength and creep resistance of the investigated SPC blend with 10 wt% of EVAc.
Thermal and elastic properties of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) + chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) blends
Eight types of PVC + CPE blends with different weight ratios (PVC/CPE = 100/0, 90/10, 80/20, 60/40, 40/60, 20/80, 10/90, and 0/100) are tested. Data on the heat conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and heat capacity of the blends investigated are reported. Primary attention is paid to the structural approach for effective elastic constants: bulk, shear, and Young's modulae. The blends are considered as random mixtures of two isotropic constituents. It is found that the elastic moduli may be well represented by the Kerner and Budiansky equations.
