Metabolic Evaluation of 94 Patients 5 to 16 Years After Ileocecal Pouch (Mainz Pouch 1) Continent Urinary Diversion

2003

PURPOSE In continent urinary diversion metabolic disturbances may be encountered in long-term followup. We evaluated metabolic consequences in patients with a minimum followup of 5 years after Mainz pouch 1 urinary diversion. At our institution continent urinary diversion using the ileocecal segment was performed between 1983 and 1995 in 458 patients. A total of 94 patients with an ileocecal pouch for a minimum of 5 years were reevaluated for metabolic changes. Median followup was 9.0 years. Routine laboratory parameters, blood gas analysis, vitamin B12, vitamin D25, cross-laps, bone specific alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin and propeptide of type I collagen were obtained. Bone density was …

Urokinase-plasminogen-activator receptor expression in disseminated tumour cells in the bone marrow and peripheral blood of patients with clinically …

2009

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the expression of urokinase-plasminogen-activator receptor (uPA-R) in disseminated tumour cells (DTC) in bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB) of patients with clinically localized prostate cancer before radical prostatectomy (RP), and to assess the associations with pathological variables and prognosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS In all, 52 patients (47 with clinically localized cancer and five with benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH, as controls) were prospectively enrolled. BM and PB samples were drawn before surgery. DTC were enriched using a commercial system, cytokeratin (CK) 8/18 was used to detect DTC, and uPA-R expression was detected by dual-immunostaining of t…

Transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis presenting as a renal abscess.

2002

We report on a 76-year-old woman who was diagnosed with a primary renal abscess of the left kidney. After percutaneous drainage, no clinical improvement was observed. Surgical exploration and nephrectomy were performed. The histologic evaluation revealed an unsuspected transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis, which had been misinterpreted as a primary renal abscess. Malignancy must be considered as an underlying cause for the formation of a renal abscess, especially if no other predisposing factors such as diabetes mellitus or urinary stones are present.

2003

PURPOSE Despite the development of new surgical techniques, the fascial sling procedure remains an important surgical technique for the treatment of female urinary stress incontinence. An advantage of combining it with an additional Burch colposuspension has been suggested. The objective of our study was to evaluate retrospectively selected patients who had undergone a fascial sling procedure with and without Burch colposuspension. MATERIALS AND METHODS Of a total of 390 females who underwent an incontinence operation at our department between 1990 and 1999, 56 patients had had a fascial sling plasty. A total of 50 patients (89 %) were followed for a median of 59.5 months. The median age wa…
