Vocal function following laser and conventional surgery of small malignant vocal fold tumours

AbstractIn the disecribed study, 26 patients after conventional, and 27 patients after laser cordectomy were examined six months or more after the operation. Videolarybogstroboscopy revealed that patients after laser cordectomy more often phonate on a purely glottic level (81 per cent) in comparison to patienbts after conventional cordectomy (19 per cent). Webs were more frequent and more extended after conventional cordectomy compared to endoscopic laser surgery. The maximal phonation time showed a very wide range with a mean value of 9 to 10 sec; there was no statistical difference between the groups of patients. Using yanagihara's classification of sonograms, a better voice quality was m…

Tinnitus-Related Distress and the Personality Characteristic Resilience

It has been suggested that personality traits may be prognostic for the severity of suffering from tinnitus. Resilience as measured with the Wagnild and Young resilience scale represents a positive personality characteristic that promotes adaptation to adverse life conditions including chronic health conditions. Aim of the study was to explore the relation between resilience and tinnitus severity. In a cross-sectional study with a self-report questionnaire, information on tinnitus-related distress and subjective tinnitus loudness was recorded together with the personality characteristic resilience and emotional health, a measure generated from depression, anxiety, and somatic symptom severi…

Anatomic Changes After Hyoid Suspension for Obstructive Sleep Apnea: An MRI Study

Objective To assess the effects of isolated hyoid suspension on subjective and objective parameters of obstructive sleep apnea and to evaluate changes in upper airway anatomy with the help of standardized magnetic resonance imaging. Study design and setting Fifteen patients received isolated hyoid suspension. Changes in respiratory disturbance index were assessed with polysomnography, and anatomical changes with standardized magnetic resonance imaging. Snoring, daytime sleepiness, and functional parameters were assessed with questionnaires. Lateral x-ray cephalometry was performed preoperatively. Results Mean respiratory disturbance index was reduced from 35.2 ± 19.1 to 27.4 ± 26.2. Forty p…
