Distribution maps of vegetation alliances in Europe

Aim The first comprehensive checklist of European phytosociological alliances, orders and classes (EuroVegChecklist) was published by Mucina et al. (2016, Applied Vegetation Science, 19 (Suppl. 1), 3-264). However, this checklist did not contain detailed information on the distribution of individual vegetation types. Here we provide the first maps of all alliances in Europe. Location Europe, Greenland, Canary Islands, Madeira, Azores, Cyprus and the Caucasus countries. Methods We collected data on the occurrence of phytosociological alliances in European countries and regions from literature and vegetation-plot databases. We interpreted and complemented these data using the expert knowledge…

Life‐form diversity across temperate deciduous forests of Western Eurasia: A different story in the understory

[Aim]To analyse the biogeographic patterns of Temperate Deciduous Forests (TDFs) in Western Eurasia based on different life-forms and forests layers and explore their relationships with the current climate, Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) climate and topography.

Crystal field and magnetism with Wannier functions: Rare-earth doped aluminum garnets

Using the recently developed method we calculate the crystal field parameters in yttrium and lutetium aluminum garnets doped with seven trivalent Kramers rare-earth ions. We then insert calculated parameters into the atomic-like Hamiltonian taking into account the electron-electron, spin-orbit and Zeeman interactions and determine the multiplet splitting by the crystal field as well as magnetic $\hat{g}$ tensors. We compare calculated results with available experimental data.

Electron paramagnetic resonance study of theCe3+pair centers inYAlO3:Ce scintillator crystals

Single crystals of $\mathrm{YAl}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ doped with Ce have been studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) at the 9.4 and 34 GHz microwave bands. Besides the single-ion $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{e}}^{3+}$ spectrum, measurements have revealed many satellite lines which belong to the $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{e}}^{3+}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{e}}^{3+}$ pair centers. Their spectra have been fitted by a general effective spin Hamiltonian describing two interacting particles with the spin $S=1/2$. Corresponding $g$ factors and spin-spin coupling constants have been determined. The spin-spin coupling constants are in the range from 0.1 up to $0.65\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mat…

EUNIS Habitat Classification: Expert system, characteristic species combinations and distribution maps of European habitats

Aim The EUNIS Habitat Classification is a widely used reference framework for European habitat types (habitats), but it lacks formal definitions of individual habitats that would enable their unequivocal identification. Our goal was to develop a tool for assigning vegetation-plot records to the habitats of the EUNIS system, use it to classify a European vegetation-plot database, and compile statistically-derived characteristic species combinations and distribution maps for these habitats. Location Europe. Methods We developed the classification expert system EUNIS-ESy, which contains definitions of individual EUNIS habitats based on their species composition and geographic location. Each ha…
